We were awoken at 5.30am to the sound of the ships foghorn, it looked fairly thick but luckily it's only patchy, so when it cleared we could see Whales & Dolphins off in the distance.
We are travelling through the Inside Passage, it is a coastal route for ships and boats along a network of passages which weave through the islands on the Pacific NW coast of North America. The coastal mountain ranges and islands offer wildlife viewing and small beautiful coastal communities.
Today we docked at Ketchikan renowned as Alaska's First City also known as Salmon Capital of the world. Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedo Island situated at the southern portion of Southeast Alaska in the Tongass National Forest. The day is grey and drizzling rain, so rugged up we set off for a walk into town, so many Jewellery & Souvenir shops and all trying to get your attention and custom with deals and offers. The sun finally broke through the cloud at 5pm just when we were pulling away from the dock.
Juneau is our next port of call we have 12 hours to explore before departure time. Juneau is located in the Gastineau Channel, and at the foot of Mt Roberts & Mt Juneau. Weather again is overcast with scattered showers not enough to stop us setting off for a walk around town where again there are numerous jewellery stores, along with some beautiful old buildings one of which is the Red Dog Saloon. We found a terrific little place called the hanger for lunch before boarding the ship.
Our last town along the passage route is Skagway it is located in a narrow-glaciated valley at the head of the Taiya Inlet, it is the most northern fjord on the Inland passage. It's home to gold-rush-era buildings, now preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad runs vintage locomotives past the famously steep Chilkoot trail. A very rustic and pretty little town with loads of charm & character.
