DAY 3: THINGS OF STONE AND WOOD
Big day out in the English countryside today with a tour to Stonehenge and neighbouring villages.
We went with ‘Mad Max Tours’ - and no our ride wasn’t a nitrogen charged post apocalyptic V8. The company was founded by a lady named Madeline (‘Mad’) and she started out doing the tours with her Terrier Maxie (‘Max’) by her side in the drivers seat - oblivious to that other movie franchise carrying the same name.
Our guide Fergie was excellent and he kept us entertained throughout the day.
First stop was Stonehenge. Yes, it is a bunch of rocks in a cow paddock, but going in with low expectations I think helped with enjoying the visit. There was definitely something eerie about the place though. Anyway, we arrived early and beat the crowds that were starting to grow by the time we left.
Next was a photo op of the ‘White Horse’, a chalk drawing into the side of a hill. I think Josh got a greater kick out of feeding the real thing that mosied up to the fence why we were there taking pics.
To round out the day we then visited the villages of Avebury, Lacock and Castle Combe. These villages are stuck in a time warp, with the buildings unchanged, some dating back to the 13th century. Hard to fathom the timber beams you’re looking at in some cases are more than several hundred years old.
As a result, Lacock and Castle Combe in particular has become a regular shooting location for many films and tv series - Harry Potter, Downtown Abbey and Pride and Prejudice just to name a few.
All up the tour was a good way to wrap up what’s been a busy but enjoyable stay in Bath.
Tomorrow we jump the border into Welsh territory. Next stop Cardiff!
