The last two days have been fun as we got back into backpacker mode here in Venice. Once we arrived in Venice we found our campsite. Yup, a first on the trip, but we are staying in tents just 10 minutes away from Venice.
In Venice there are only two options for getting around: boat or foot. There are hundreds of vehicles that cross over, but as soon as they get there they are directed into car-lots. We walked up and over many little bridges, through a few small alleys and eventually found ourselves in St. Mark's square. St. Mark's Square, Piazza San Marco, is the heart of Venice and plays host to the city's premier sites.
From my travel guide:
The square was constructed in order to have an uninterrupted view over Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica. Napoleon called the square
"Europe's most beautiful lounge."
The square is an amazing "lounge" but currently hosts thousands of pigeons that kind of make it that annoying song in the background that you just can't get away from. In the square you have a bell tower Torre dell'Orologio, which was built in a renaissance style at the end of the 1400s, The 98.6 meter Campanile Tower which was built in 1173, and St. Mark's Basilica which is a famous Venetian church.
We also found our way to Harry's Bar which is very popular with the celebrities and created the Bellini (a mix of champagne and peach juice). Last, we walked to the Venice Ghetto which was built in 1516 and is the center of Jewish life in Venice.
We truly enjoyed our couple of days Venice. It is one of the most beautiful cities we've seen. We enjoyed walking the car-less streets and now say arrivederchi to Italy and gruezi to Switzerland.
Ciao,
B & R
