So the bikes came out today. A gentle 22km ride to Le Mastre where there were markets for us to browse. The support wagon carried the non-riders to Le Mastre via the swimming area of the river, which was picturesque. We found the riders having a restorative coffee in the market, which was otherwise full of stalls selling local cheese (a basil version of which was a deep green), home cured sausages, fresh apricots, peaches, tomatoes and melons.
We found a bakery and bought something that looked like a batard with pizza topping, and Ross had an eclair as well.
We visited Chateau Desaigne, which was closed, but even wandering through the medieval village was interesting, narrow cobbled streets, with drainage channels through the middle of the road.
Onwards then to the Chateau in Le Cheylard, the origins of which date back to 1278. As a centre for the resistance in WWII it was bombed and destroyed by the Germans. But the local authorities have gradually gathered finances and restored it. Also in the grounds are some spectacularly old and enormous sequoia Wellingtonias. Quite beautiful.
