We arrived in Krabi and transferred by bus to Ao Nang which is a little further along the coast from Krabi. On arrival I arranged with a local dive shop to do 2 scuba dives the following day. A few of the others decided to do the “Discover Scuba” course and so we were a few on the boat together. The boat and the crew were really good and we headed off to Koh Pi Pi Lay for our first dive. The first dive we did was great and I got to see my first green turtle. The second dive was a drift dive and that was my first as well. The beauty of this dive is that you get your buoyancy right and then merely float past a wall filled with coral and fish. Water was a warm 28C and viz was about 15m. It was a great day out on the boat and all the guys who did the one day “Discovery” had a great time as well. The following day I joined most of the others and we did a speed boat trip that visits a number of island beaches including Maya beach (from the movie The Beach). The speedboat has 2 X 200HP engines on the back and really flies across the water. We visited Maya beach which was awesome, did some snorkeling & I even managed to hand feed some fish. It was an idyllic day out on the beaches and had a great time. Both evenings we went and had a seafood platter & fish platter. Basically all the freshly caught fish of the day is put out. You go up and select what you want and then the restaurant BBQ’s it for you. Well it only cost £4 for a fish platter which had 5 different fish on it. I ate shark, mackerel, sail fish, salmon, tuna, sea trout, king prawns, mussels & squid. The 3rd day I went off to Krabi and did some rock climbing. I was happy to see that the climbing that I did before paid off on this trip and I used my legs more than my arms to climb the rock face. I got back just in time to have a shower and then board a bus to head to Satun. We arrived in the town of Satun. It borders on Malaysia and it is quite evident that we were going into a poorer country as the town was a bit of a dump. We went out for dinner and I had the hottest dish yet in Asia, and boy did it hurt me. I think it burnt my memory banks as I cannot even remember what I ordered. Not even the Thai jungle curry was this hot. The hotel we stayed in even had a brothel down below so not too far to get some relief…. If you were that way inclined.
