Oil has been found in the Albertine basin on the border between Uganda and DRC by Tullow Oil (a UK oil explorer) and its two partners, Total of France and CNOOC (the Chinese National Offshore Oil Company). The finds are significant - enough oil on the Ugandan side to potentially add anything between $2bn to $6bn per annum for the next 20 years to Ugandan tax revenues.
The problem is that some of the oil has been found underneath the Murchison National Park and as you drive out on your morning game viewing run, one of the first things you see are a number of oil rigs, then various new roads and then the traffic associated with the exploration process!
There are apparently site restoration provisions in the agreements with the exploration companies and once they move to the production phase there will be less impact (provided there are no spills) but oil rigs are still not what you expect to find in a National Park!
However, the potential income for Uganda from oil will be massively greater than the tourist income from the National Park, plus Murchison has recovered previously from major impacts caused by civil war and large scale poaching. Also, if we examine our own back yards we very quickly find that massive energy schemes in both US and UK National Parks are not at all unknown.
