Finally in New Zealand and it's easy to see why so many people compare it to the UK - it can get really cold, even in the middle of their so-called summer. Bizarrely we are stocking up on cold and wet weather gear because we've had about 4 seasons over the course of two days.
Christchurch is apparently the second largest town in New Zealand, which seems incredible; there are so few cars on the road it's hardly worthwhile looking up and down the road before crossing and everywhere looks so clean and empty. There's a cute little tram system running around a 3km loop and manned by avuncular men who tell funny little stories and spend forever helping old ladies and small children get on and off. Consequently it takes about an hour to crawl around town, giving Brian ample opportunity to point out how terribly twee the whole experience is and how quickly we could have walked the same distance. He forebore to mention the astronomical cost of a two day pass, but I could tell it had crossed his mind by the way he pursed his lips.
