Brian's Adventures
Well, made it to Darwin after our 6 day road trip. Our trip started back on 21st July where we made it just past Townsville and found our campsite for the night...outside a service station (food, toilets, what more do you need) Next day we set off taking it easy after 'Annabelle' was over heating a bit the day before. Not much happened on the road, the same case for most days, then we decided on what we called luxury, a proper campsite with SHOWERS!! We decided to go an sample the local watering holes so it was the first night for the Rock N Roll t-shirt...cut the deck and Andy lost so hid\s turn to wear it. Richmond's nightlife didn't have much to offer, even on a saturday night, so back to the van to watch Mrs Doubtfire on our B&W TV...a TV, how about that, back in the day backpackers would be lucky to have a pack of cards.
Next leg of the trip was from Richmond to Mount Isa. Went to an Irish bar that night, I got the lowest card so Rock N Roll t-shirt, or should I say crop top for me. The outback doesn't have much to offer apart from straight roads but on our way to Threeways we stopped at camawoola for a pub lunch as a wee treat for the boys. No campsite for us that night so outside a service station again, watching Serendipity on our TV. Up early and off to Katherine stopping off at Mataranka thermal pools for a freshen up. Katherine isn't a nice place to be, it's full of tramps walking the streets so we had a nervous sleep that night, especially after what happened to Gary in the toilets. He was washing our dishes when a tramp came in grabbed our washing sponge, pulled his trousers down and started scrubbing his pants...we lost a lot of cuttlery because of that. That night I was in the tent. I was woken by what I thought was a tramp peeing against the tent, but thankfully it was just a sprinkler.
Wednesday was our last leg to Darwin. We stopped at Edith Falls to check out its waterfalls and freshwater pools. You would never think something like this existed when driving through the arid outback. Further up the road we stopped off at the Adelaide River Inn for a few light refreshments & wedges. Think this was the pub that was used in the Crocodile Dundee films...it had the buffalo from the film in it anyway. Got to Darwin and decided it was fitting to celebrate our success, managing to tag on to a pub crawl for free.
Not a lot happening in Darwin but I suppose we were here to work. In between the job hunting we hit the beach but it is so hot in Darwin you'd be sweating just lying down. Played in a football comp on sunday but after two 1-1 draws we were out. Apart from looking for work didn't get up to much to save some cash but on thursday, now 3rd August, we set off to Litchfield Nation Park for a spot of camping. Camped that night then spent the rest of the in the NP going round all the waterfalls and freshwater pools. We were lucky where we camped because we had Florence Falls, probably the best one, right on our door step for a morning swim and wake up.
Got back to Darwin and went to the deckchair cinema, basically an outdoor cinema where you sit on old style deck chairs...quite querky. Watched a film called Candy, very interesting and shocking. Sunday again so team Jeff decided to try again for victory. Playing hungover we were doing not too bad with Gary popping up with the goals, unusual for a right-back by trade. Got to the final this time, gary scoring again to put us in front. However, they pulled one back then in the last minutes gary must have fancied some more glory so he put one past our own keeper...own goal, well done, losing finalists.
Worked at the Darwin Cup (horse racing) getting double pay because it was a public holiday, treated ourselves to a sit down Indian meal, well earnt by the way after cooking on our camp stove for the past week. Tuesday 8th we went to see jumping crocodiles on the Adelaide river. When we first got there they were letting people hold a python so I plucked up the courage and put it round my neck. Quite a weird feeling and I didn't like it when it started going for my face.
That sums up my time in Darwin with the plan now to head to Kanurrara to do some fruit picking then go to Broome...but who knows
