After negotiating our tuk tuk fare we set off at 5am to catch sunrise over Angkor Wat.... unfortunately it was a couldy morning so sun rise didnt really happen!
We navigated around the worlds largest religious building and took a lot of snaps. The heavens opened shortly after breakfast so looking around Bayon temple was very wet! Bayon has 216 faces sculpted into its walls so there is always a set of eyes on you when you are looking around, eerey.
Next up was Ta Phrom, we desided to take one of the local guides for this one, cause we love are facts!! This is one of the few temples that has been left untouched to show tourists how things were intially found. You may have seen this temple in Tomb Raider, with little Angelina Jolie Pitt. Our guide showed us a sculpture which depicts a dinosaur, check out the pic.
Siem Reap is a bit of a party town, with loads of good bars and lots of options for eatiing out, all based in and around Bar St (good name). We actually bumped into a girl we met in Bangkok 6 weeks ago here for a few drinks.
The next day we decided to explore the countryside on horseback. So we headed out to Happy Ranch, unfortunately due to the recent floods we had to walk the last 1km. The horses were great and well looked after by a New Zealand girl, who lead us on our trek. We headed out for 3hrs, through flooded paddy fields, red dirt roads, passed school kids (who were in their flooded classrooms) and passed lots of animals and local people. It was great fun and I don't mind saying I was walking a bit funny afterwards.
Yesterday we went to a floating village via tuk tuk once again. It was nice driving through the countryside again and we took a 50min boat to the village. The village is flooded in 3m of water for 5 months of the year. This is due to the strange tidal movemnts of the Tonle Sap lake. Pigs and livestock are kept in floating pens. The lake flows in one direction in the wet season and the other in the dry season. We met some nice kids and got to see what life on a lake would be like!
Tomorrow we head to Kuala Lumpor to start our Malaysian leg of the trip and meet up with Lynn. She has the pleasure of joining us for the next 3 weeks!! Happy days.
