Yesterday's marathon sightseeing efforts meant we had ticked most of the tourist spots off our 'to see in London' list. Stu very happily returned to work today ... looking forward to the 'day off' to recover from us dragging him all around London :)
We set off on our own today and headed back to Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard. If you're ever thinking about going, my suggestion ... don't bother, search for a video on YouTube instead! It was weird to have police riding around on horses warning people to watch their bags because of pickpockets. We got there half an hour early, but when it started, all of the action was happening the other side of the palace courtyard from where we were standing. In the end we gave up our 'prime spot' right by the fence and went for a wander around to see if we could find anywhere better. However, when there are a billion other people (really, there were a billion there) and you are less than 6 feet tall there isn't too much hope. We did get to see one of the marching bands and a little bit of the ceremony but eventually decided to carry on.
Luckily, while heading to Hyde Park for lunch we had a group of horse guardsmen ride past! And we only had 5 other people to navigate around for getting a good photo ;)
We had a bit of a wander around Hyde Park before and after lunch and found plenty of squirrels! Yay!! I played the role of tourist very well, sneaking up on them and taking a million photos :) I'm sure the locals will think I'm odd but oh well.
I bet you'll be able to guess who picked our next spot to visit ... the Science Museum ;) On our way there we saw the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, the Royal Albert Hall and Queen Alexandra's house. After a ridiculous amount of time searching we finally found the entrance to the 6 level museum full of all things science and headed in. Thankfully we didn't go to all the levels and my darling husband selected just a few topics :) First stop, the ground floor and the 'Exploring Space' exhibition. I have to admit that it was very interesting with brilliant displays. They had an entire corner all about living in space, including how they go to the toilet! It really was all you needed to know ;) Once we were 'spaced out' (hee hee, get it!?) we headed upstairs to the computers and mathematics galleries.
Just to de-geek myself, we then headed to Oxford St, Soho for some shopping. We didn't really buy much but it was quite a cultural experience - the number of shops and people was crazy! Most importantly for Brett though they did have a McDonalds (or 4) so we could enjoy 99p McFlurry's :)
