Summary
Although not a lot to see over these 4 countries, we did enjoy ourselves. We drove about 1500 km's over the space of about 6 days but it felt like more. Maybe because we'd had a few big days driving in Turkey so it was compounded. Hugo ran well the entire time, he's really coming into his element in eastern Europe.
Bulgaria highlights included the Wonderful Bridges, Trigrad Gorge and Devil's Throat Cave, Rila Monastery (although we didn't go inside) and Iskar Gorge where we nearly go wiped out by a car spinning out of control on our side of the road.
We were in Serbia for less than 24 hours and the only highlight was playing frisbee with one of our dinner plates on a deserted grassy field beside the road.
Kosovo was much of the same however we did have an interesting border crossing. Kosovo isn't part of the EU so we had to pay for car insurance as our Green Card isn't valid. The customs officer did us a favour and we only had to pay 30 Euros instead of 70. It did cost us an additional 5 EU bribe and a Turkish Delight chocolate but it was worth it. Driving around the border of Kosovo would have been about the same amount in fuel to it all worked out in.
Montenegro is stunning. In one day we were up in the mountains getting bogged on ice with no snow chains, overlooking frozen lakes with just as incredible mountains in the background, then down the road was the incredible Ostrob monastery carved out of rock into the side of a cliff and then within hours we were at Kotor Bay overlooking crystal clear water from an awesome viewpoint at the top of the surrounding mountains. We were disappointed we didn't get to spend some more time in Montenegro but Croatia was next and we were keen to get there.
