We had a fairly early tour organised for this morning so had to be up & in the theatre by 8am. Herded onto buses our first stop after a short drive through the usual rundown, mangy dog, tropical Central American suburbia was a banana plantation. Being on a bus load of oldies it took forever for everyone to get off, then back on the bus. We got the quick explanation about how quickly bananas grow & saw the runner drag in a row of banana bunches along a metal pulley system which stretches miles across the plantation. A quick look at all the bananas being sorted & washed then it was back on the bus (slowly) for our next stop at the Tortaguero Canals to take a boat ride for animal spotting. Off to a slightly slow start with some various birds we ended up seeing around 5 sloths (both 2 & 3 toed) as well as some howler monkeys & some little bats attached to a tree. The sloths were definitely real ones, compared to the furry ball in the tree I saw last time in the cloud forest. A couple of them lounged into a slow scratch & having the binoculars I could make out faces & long nails. The next stop was by the side of the train tracks as we clambered onto a 2 carriage open windowed train which was maybe 80 or so years old. It rattled through some tropical forest & past another banana factory for maybe 30 mins where the bus met us to return to the port. After some lunch back on the ship we only ventured about a block into town as it wasn't really a very pretty place & we found a bar with $2 beers & free wifi. The ship wasn't departing until 7pm, well after sunset so we had a drink on the back deck & some 6pm sushi then went up another level as we departed. At 7.30 the hot glass show was on in the middle of the lawn so we sat down to see that before dinner. It was far more involved than I thought to blow glass with the young woman heating then shaping & layering different colours to make a vase. Downstairs to dinner then our usual food baby putting us to sleep soon after.
