Day 88-90 Montezuma
We caught a ferry over to peninsular Nicoya and then jumped on a bus to our next stop, Montezuma. It's a small little town with a very laid back hippy-surfer feel to it. We wandered through a few hostels looking for a nice place on the beach to stay for a few days. We came across this one place that didn´t even have a name, it looked like a private residence but had a sign out the font saying ´rooms´ and was just across the road from the beach. We walked up into this enormous property which had 2 homes on it. We were staying in a 2 storey home with a huge veranda and balcony, it almost looked like an old plantation home. It was run by a lovely family who showed us to our room which was on the second floor where there were 3 rooms in total all opening up onto the huge balcony which had a dining table, a few comfy chairs, a hammock and great sea views. This place was amazing for the price, so much bigger than any of the hostels we saw earlier, we were set.
So we threw our bags into our room and headed to one of the bars in town that was showing the World Cup final. We walked into a bar that had set up a HUGE projector screen where a few hundred people were sitting staring and cheering, cold beers in hand and large portions of food in front of them. This was perfect. We scored one of the last tables at the front, ordered a few drinks and a mahi mahi sandwich and watched the game. It was a great afternoon and everyone was getting into the spirit of it.
After paying more for lunch than we had for accommodation in a few places, we headed back to our beautiful hostel to get ready for some beach time. We headed out for a walk to check out the beaches around the area and try out luck at a swim. The weather had been pretty stormy the last few days so the water wasn´t that inviting, plus most of the beaches only had a small amount of sand and mainly consisted of rocks and rock pools. The sand was still black like in Nicaragua but it just wasn´t really the best for swimming or surfing right then. We kept walking as it was still beautiful with the jungle behind us and lots of little different bays to look at.
The next morning we tried to walk to the waterfall which we had heard was a good 40 minutes through the jungle and sounded great. Seeing as there was so much rain at night there was no way of crossing the river. There was so much water around that no one could make the pass over the rocks to get to the waterfall trail so that adventure was cut short but Brendan had organised to head out for the afternoon on a half day surfing excursion while I was pretty content just to wander to some other beaches and chill out.
So Brendan jumped in a van with a couple of other keen surfers and headed a few kilometres down the road to a nice beach that had both a beach and point break. The waves were clean and had enough size that he returned very content. I caught up on some emails, chilled in the hammock and wandered to the other beaches we missed the day before as well as picking up a heap of veggies to cook in the huge kitchen downstairs. We were noticing how much more expensive Costa Rica was so cooking was a very good options, plus it gave me a chance to make another mystery bag meal. With limited ingredients at all these little towns it's pretty fun trying to think up what you can make, well I have enjoyed it anyway. So with a bunch of veggies and some limited spices we cooked up a huge veggie curry stew thing which we ate and modified for the next few days.
Montezuma was a great little place. We could see that if the weather had been nicer the beaches would have been alot more inviting and maybe we would have stayed longer but we had got a good feel for the place and were now ready to move on to the next beach town up on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
