We went snorking in the Rio de Prata which is a river that has natural spring feeding into it. We were a bit sceptical about how good the fish would be, but were glad that wed gone when we got there. The springs are protected, and you can´t put your feet down on the bottom, or swim too vigoursly (we doggy paddled with arms only).
We were given wetsuits, snorkels and booties to wear, and a truck dropped us near to the river. We had a 30 minute walk through the forest to the river and boy was it hot. It must have been edleast 27 degrees and walking in a heavy duty wetsuit wasn´t that comfortable. Luckily it was a short leg with long arms so we could just take the top half off to help cool us during the walk.
We then floated down the stream for almost one and a half hours. The water was beautifully clear and the fish were hugh and really colourful. They were blue, yellow and a few dark blue and some brownish ones. The bottom of the river was sandy and in a few places we could see the sand bubbling where the spring were feeding in.
The river was fairly shallow (generally about 1 metre, although often shallower) we floated over rocks and in some places it seemed we would scrape on the rocks but generally floated over the top.
At one point we had to exit the water as it got too rough and we walked for 5 minutes through the bush. Then back into the water where we swam through a tiny rapid before beginning to float gently down the river again.
At the end of the branch of the river we were floating in, it joined another branch of the river that had a lower temperature (18 degrees) and we caught a boat down river to the where the truck met us. The motor on the back of the boat was electric.
It has been one of my highlights of the trip so far.
