Landing about 12.00pm, we had managed to time it perfectly for the bus ride out to Sausalito. A 5 minute taxi ride and we were home.
We are using Air BnB again for this trip, so I've booked us into a cottage in the Bay Area of San Francisco. From the deck area of the cottage, we have a view over the bay. As the afternoon cooled, we watched the fog engulf the city, leaving only the tips of the sky scrapers visible. Rolling off the hills to our right and over the bay, it was quite a sight for the unaccustomed.
Once again, we have lucked in with our lodgings and hosts. Joe and Tatyana have gone out of their way to help, even dropping us at the local shopping area and suggesting a nice pasta place for dinner. Only to return about 9.30pm to collect us !
We will be off to grab a ferry over to the city in the morning and do the "touristy" bus ride around town...
As anyone that knows me is aware, meticulous planning of travel is not my forte :)
Assuming anywhere in California is always warm, I have packed shorts and T shirts...
Weather prediction today is a high of 19 and a low of 9, with possible rain... At least it keeps the fog down.
Ok, the day didn't go as planned... First up, we were still asleep at 11.00am...
Eventually making it to SF around 1.30pm, we grabbed a burger each at Pier 39 (very trendy with sensational burgers) and wandered around for a while. Eventually jumping on an open top bus for a tour of the city. Securing a US SIM card and a pair of shoes from Union Square, we ventured into China Town (Tenderloin district) for a look around.
Much to my surprise, San Francisco is not a large city, having a population of around 950,000.
The city itself was all but destroyed by an earth quake and ensuing fires in 1906.
Although it has a nice feel to it, it seems a mish mash of style and architecture. Not withstanding the steep hills, it isn't overly impressive as far as city's go..
The curiously named "Tenderloin" district gained notoriety as the worst neighbourhood in the city (I suppose we were lucky it was day time). Businesses in the area, having many butchers fed up with being the victims of crime and the police refusing to patrol at night, so devised a reward system of meat bonuses to officers completing a night shift in the area.... Apparently...
Wiki has other references to the soft under belly of society and the loins of local prostitutes, but who knows...
Oh, and Katrina, we found a couple of hats.....
