The kids and I had breakfast in the Mexican sun this morning while Gab had her hair done. We had a go of the Aqua Duck water slide and the Nemo water garden, but we spent most of the morning in the Aqua Lab. The Lab is full of leaking pipes, buckets, showers, jets and squirts. The kids had an absolute ball, I had to drag them out of there an hour later.
Down in the main pool, the kids watched funnel vision while sitting in the pool cooling off in the baking sun. Gab returned looking glamorous from her morning in the salon, before we all went and got ready for our shore excursion and lunch.
While at lunch the weather started to change, we sat in the theatre waiting to get ashore for over an hour while the crew tried to dock. Finally connected to dry land we headed onto the dock. The wind and rain tried their best to bring Gab's new glamour doo down, but not even the humidity could land a blow.
Soon we were on a bus to the ruins at Chacchoben. The site is made up of four temples and a small residential area. With the Mayan civilization living in timber shelters, the main structures eroded centuries ago leaving just the foundations for the houses. This site was established in 200bc. Although the ruins we saw at Ostia Antica are from 200ad, they're an example of what the Romans were doing for some centuries prior. Both the similarities in living solutions and vast differences in progress of the civilizations are obvious. Where Romans had sewerage, under floor heating, shops and offices, the Mayans had straight roads and temples aligned with the flow of the sun.
Costa Maya is a recently established tourist town, but there isn't much here at all. A few duty free shops selling discount diamonds of unknown quality, watches either at the same price as Sydney, or of unknown brands. I don't know what the Mexican equivalent of "I couldn't be arsed" is, but it encoded in everything in this town. I saw more buildings with reo sticking out of them than I saw completed ones. Perhaps there is one of those tax laws like in Italy where you don't pay until the structure is completed?
To the ship for the "Wishes" stage show - awesome with fantastic stage production and a trip though a whole bunch of Disney songs complete with characters. The kids were glued to the stage the whole time.
In our room we were impressed with the Mayan Mask the room staff had made out of our bed throw, then at dinner we all tried to copy the boot napkin folding, sounds lame but look for the pictures. Here you dine at a prescribed restaurant each night following their rotation program. The wait staff follow you though, so they are there every night at each restaurant so they get to know what you like. Tonight there was no need to order coffee for example, it just arrived. The kids are plugged into this too, tonight when Anson asked Max what he would like for dinner he replied - "You know how I roll Anson, I'll have the burger hold the cheese please" love you Fid.
