Brett & Lindsay's Travels
After being berrated by several family members for not updating the journal, here you go. We added pictures too!!!
After we left amsterdam we spent three nights in London. The first day we did the whole tourist thing. We went to Westminster cathedral, westminster abbey, big ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, The Tower Bridge, and most importantly Topshop, Englands most reputable clothing retailer.
Day two we did more shopping and took a long walk through Hyde Park (minus Lindsay, who sat in a lounge chair at the park). Topshop day two was a four story bedlam of teenage girls running around like chickens with their heads cut off. ps chelse, in the middle of topshop was sweet factory.
We wanted to try to see an english premier league soccer match while we were there, but the only game was in Liverpool two hours outside of town and their two best players were playing in a European qualifying game, so we decided to do the next best thing, and go watch the qualifying match at a traditional english pub. It got a little loud, but the game didn't really mean too much, so no real hooligans.
We wanted to see the countryside, but got screwed on our train tickets and had to leave at 5 am. I have to say, I wasn't too impressed with London, just reminded me of any big northern town in the US. People there seem very stressed, not very vacation oriented. I must say though, on the contrary of what most people say, I loved the food!! Bangers and mash, fish and chips, and burgers piled high with bacon, fried eggs, melted cheese, onions, and mushrooms.
We had a brief stop in Paris for 5 hours and took in the park next to the Louvre. We'll be back there to spend more time when we fly out.
We're now in Interlaken, Switzerland for the fourth night. I had to come back here after staying only one day six years ago. The only way to discribe this place is picturesque, or maybe perfectly swiss. A small town nesstled in between two glacier lakes at the foot of the tallest mountains in Europe makes for beautiful scenery and just about every outdoor activity you can hope for.
Day one I tried to sign up for the bungee jumping out of a gondola because I heard it was one of the longest cords in the world, but they canceled that day, so I had to settle for hang gliding, which I had missed out on 6 years ago. First timer, and it was unbelievable. Closest thing I can imagine to actually flying. We were up over the mountains for over thirty minutes, looping around and soaring over trees. Lindsay thought I was on drugs when I came back from the trip. That night we partied at the metro ( at Balmer's ).
Yesterday, both Lindsay and I went canyoning. For those that don't know what that is, it involves sliding down waterfalls, jumping off of them and belaying down them on a rope, all inside of a canyon following the river down. (We are having trouble uploading those pics, bear with us). You wear full wetsuits and safety equipment, but the water is a balmy 42 degrees. Lindsay hated me for this one (I really thought she would enjoy it?, you'll be able to see the anquish on her face in the photos). We were woken up from a nap by cowbells. That is cows and deer marching through town with bells on their necks and flowers on their heads. They were followed by an interesting swiss band, check out their outfits!!! The swiss aren't known for their style.
Today we took a train up through Grindewald to Jaungfraujoch, the top of Europe. Great scenery the whole way to the top. The last 45 minutes was inside of the mountain and you took an elevator to get to the viewpoints. The first time I've seen glaciers, the top is around 11,900 feet. They have an ice palace inside the glacier with sculptures, the sphinx at the top for viewing the mountains, restaurants and an outdoor playland with skiing, sledding, dog sleds, trekking, etc. It was nice to see snow in September and it was the first time Lindsay has ever sledded before. We're off to Venice tomorrow for the next three nights, then on to Vienna. Stay classy USA!!
