Hotel Royale, Jaisalmer! Another swimming pool and home of the only government authorised Bang Cakes and Bang Lassi! A mild weed milkshake! We will report on these after trying them this evening.
But first, our first sleeper train... On the way to the station, our bloody taxi ran out of petrol and he did a runner after he thought I was fighting with him. Standing in the middle of a dark street on our own with a taxi, loads of locals soon gathered round questioning me. Minutes later, the taxi drivers brother turns up in another car with 4 mates telling us to get in his car! I said I wanted a taxi not to jump in with you and your mates; I have a train in 30mins!
I agreed with just him in the car and told him to hurry and he sure did! The train station was a crazy sight- bodies lay all over the joint, some with little life and some who looked dead! After trying to understand our ticket and the station we find the platform and two Kiwis who helped us briefly. The train journey was great, easy, slept comfortably and I want more!
We are currently soaking up more sun around the pool and Sinead is teaching one of the members of staff how to swim while I write this! Hahaha! She soon gave up after having to hold his hairy belly and back! But bless him he genuinely couldn't swim and stood around observing everyone's techniques. He ended up doing a combination of a doggy crawl breast paddle?!?!?
Jaisalmer is clearly dominated by desert safaris, but after that it is chilled and looks like a great place. Similar to Pushkar but bigger and busier without being to mad!
Waking up after a late night playing cards and drinking whiskey with our German friends until the early hours. We have a mad half an hour to get packed and ready for our night in the desert. With breakfast out of the way and hotel checked out of we headed into town for some supplies. Of course we had to go and get a bhang lassi to ease off our hangover ;) they come in four strengths - baby lassi, medium lassi, strong lassi and full power 24 hour no sleep, no toilet, no shower (As the owner described it)! Lassi done, next stock up on samosas. So far the best samosas we have eaten have been here. They are smaller than most we have tried, not as spicy either but a sweet tangy tomato flavour -unreal!!!
So all set we head out to the desert, 6 people squashed into the back of a mini van, we embark on the sweatiest hour of our trip so far. Luckily our two German friends are with us but the other two we have never met before and at this point we are all stuck to each other.
After arriving we drink tea and enjoy an hour of chilling out before setting off on our camels, but you can't chill much as there is a German in our ears, an annoying German!
Once the camels were ready we got saddled in and leaned back, ready for take off! At first it was a little strange, but after a little while it was amazing, or awesome as the yanks say! The strong lassi had sent Brad in to a mellow hypnotic state where he did speak for at least an hour! We stopped off at various point to let the camels, relax and drink, before reaching sunset point, which was picture perfect!
Untouched sand dunes and a beer, what more could you need... The bloody German to shut up!
Brad was soon awake and rolled off into the dunes and made his own path, I however, had a fag at the top and took the breath taking view in!
After sunset we jumped back onto the camels and back to base, where we were treated to some traditional Indian music and the lady boy dance! He was good, I mean she!
Next, dinner time and we were ready to fest! Dinner was again beautiful and we both went up for seconds, especially the oil rich, spicy option. This is clearly why Brad had a number two in the desert!
While the night was setting in, it wasn't long before we had to hop into the jeep and back into the desert where our hotel awaited, yet it was a thin mattress and sheet on the sand. Although we didn't have the best of sleeps, it was still a magical experience!
