Friday 12th July- a local guide took us through the Medina - went to an unrestored Fondouk - an inn for travelling caravan nets- 16th c. Then to a restored fondouk - currently a photographic gallery. Very quiet as the square doesn’t start operating until 4pm, and also Friday is prayer observing day. Still colourful, tho a tad dangerous with motor bikes roaring thru the narrow passage ways - crazy. We visited “The Secret Garden” - dates back to Saadian Dynasty - 400 years ago and rebuilt in mid 19th c. Beautiful villa with exotic and Islamic gardens. Then to a herbologist - where the Argan oils and other products are produced. Produced from the kernel of the nut from Argan tree. Then a tasting of different styles of cooking: Tanjia- in pots placed in the hot ash taken from the Hamman ( baths) furnace . Mechoui- in deep pits . The Arabs brought with them spices for food - prior to that Berber food was very bland. Add cumin and salt to Mechoui, Tanjia- garlic, saffron, lemon and cumin.
Swim when back at Riad- then a farewell dinner on roof top.
