'storms in the serengeti'
(Written (very) ex post- using diary extracts)
Back in the town of Arusha on the Kenya/ Tanzania border, having spent a few amazing days in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater. We stay for one night in a camp in the middle of the Serengeti, in which we arrive in the middle of a thunderstorm (passing a lioness with her young on the way). It is pretty mental trying to set up camp, but is a brilliant memory. I am woken up during the night to the sound of hyenas 'laughing' really near our tents. We do a couple of safari drives and see loads of wildlife, go to an excavation site where we see the skull of 1.7 million year old human, visit a Maasai village and head to a camp on the edge of the crater. The next day we spend in the crater itself, which is a bit of an epic journey down into, and we get to see a tremendous amount of wildlife- including 4 of the big 5 (rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion- just the leopard being elusive). Memorable moment the next morning at breakfast when we are sitting round eating, and a huge elephant walks into the camp from the crater's edge, eyes us up, and then plods off into the bushes. Quite an experience. Nairobi and the Maasai Mara next…
