Namaste from Delhi! It's the end of our second day in the Capital & I have had 'The Smile' since we stepped off the plane! Somehow we have managed to have a chilled out couple of days, mainly due to the area we are staying in; a Tibetan Refugee Colony North of the City Centre. This place is so chilled out, it has lots of twisty, narrow streets & Tibetan Monks wandering around going about their business. We're staying in a really nice, but basic, guest house called Wongdhen House (Vish has actually surprised me by not moaning, so it must be OK!) We've mainly been eating Tibetan food (I still haven't had my masala dosa fix), we tried momos (steamed dumplings) which were really good, but the Tibetan tea was pretty vile, they drink it salty! Anyway the Tibetan Zone is cool & although it's a bit of a mission away from the Centre, we have enjoyed risking our lives on the 10 min cycle rickshaw journey to the nearest Metro station! The Delhi Metro is wicked, beats the London Underground any day! It's only been open a few years so it's all new & modern, a total contrast to the rest of the city, they even have the same Oyster card system! We've been total tourists for the last couple of days but haven't really had too much unwanted attention. I've been getting a lot of stares, but lets face it, that's nothing new! We decided to try & avoid the City centre at first, so Yesterday we went down the India Gate, which is a wide tree lined boulevard, it reminded me of Hyde Park, you can really see the British influences all over the city, its weird seeing familiar buildings in such an unfamiliar place! After that we hit Humanayun's tomb, which is like a mini Taj Mahal - it was amazing! I had a real 'I'm India' moment there, it was so beautiful, there was a lovely breeze & the sun was shining, I have no idea what I'll be like when I actually see the Taj Mahal on Monday!
Today we decided to brave Old Delhi, which we were warned to be full of touts & beggars, we did get a few street kids following us, but they soon got bored when we ignored them & we really didn't experience that much hassle at all (I'm sure we have it all to come though!) We went up to Lal Quila which is a huge Red Fort in the centre of Delhi - it was impressive & had lovely gardens where we chilled out and even had a little snooze it was so relaxing! We also got in a load of temple action & managed to visit a Hindu temple, a Sikh temple, a Buddist temple & a Mosque! Delhi isn't as dirty as I expected either, I haven't seen anyone s***ting in the streets yet, which is disappointing! It is hectic & crazy in places, but it is entirely possible to bypass the madness! I wasn't really expecting to like Delhi, but it's pretty cool! I also had my first celeb-like moment this afternoon, we were leaving the Red Fort & there was a school trip, so loads of little school girls were lined up along either side of the path. We had to walk through the middle & one of the girls saw us & waved 'Hi' so I waved back, which then started a chorus from 100 little Indian school girls waving & saying Hi!! It was so cute!
Oh & how ridiculous is this - I'm wearing a dress from Primark & I actually managed to bump into someone else wearing exactly the same dress! In Delhi!! You're just not safe anywhere!!
So Tomorrow is our last day here in Delhi, so we're hitting the bazaars in the morning then catching the train to Agra in the afternoon, next stop is the Taj Mahal - I can't wait!!
