Our day started with a visit to the Jama Mosque, the royal mosque built by the Mugal Emperor, Shah Jahan in 1656. This is a big and beautiful site in the Old Dehli area. Here the streets are more crowded and we started to see India from the Indian point of view. We climbed to top of one of the towers at the mosque and got a good view of Old Delhi. Near the mosque is the market place called Chandni Chowk. This market is narrow lane ways with shops packed together side by side. We travelled through the laneway on a bicycle rickshaw. The photos of Chandni Chowk tell the tale better than my words. Later we visited the memorial to Mahatma Gandi. The Mahatma is the Nelson Mandela of India. His picture is on all the currency. Later in the afternoon we visited Qutab Minar a UNESCO world heritage site in South Delhi. This monument includes a a sandstone tower which is the highest tower in India. The site was built in the early 13th century. It was a long ride back by bus from South Delhi to New Delhi were our hotel was located. We really got to understand the complexity and sheer madness of trvelling by road in India.
