We fly from Varanasi to Agra. After lunch we check into our hotel - JP Palace. In the early evening we see a live show - a play and dance depicting the journey of the love and life of the Shah Jahan and his dear wife Mumtaz Mahal. The next morning we are meant to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, but alas it is so foggy that we cannot see at all. Instead we go to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World heritage site built of red sandstone in 1565-73. In the form of a crescent moon it houses a palaces, audience halls, mosques and beautifully sculpted gardens. The fort sits high over the Yamuna River and on a clear day one can see the Taj Mahal. We have lunch at Taj Khema a lush green hill that now offers a clear and un-interrupted view of the Taj. The path leading up is a carpet bordered with fresh flower petals and garlands of marigolds. After lunch we go to the Taj Mahal and as it is Sunday so do hundreds of thousands of other tourists and locals. The Taj Mahal was built largely of white marble between 1632 and 1653 by Shah Jahan to enshrine the body of his favorite wife. Described by a poet as "a teardrop on the face of eternity" and is truly awesome.
