Today we met up with our friends Suzie and Elaine and took a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels about 80 mins outside of Saigon.
Cu Chi is where the Northern Vietnamese dug hundreds of miles of tunnels during the Vietnam war to fight the Southern Vietnamese and Americans.
It was a fascinating place demonstrating great ingenuity and commitment to warfare and survival.
Whatever your thoughts on the war it would be difficult not to be impressed.
Rob and I shot a Carrabine semi automatic gun and also took a short walk in the tunnels.
The entrance way for many of the secret entrances and exists was a rectangle of just 25cm.
Afterwards we asked to be dropped off outside the War Museum in Saigon.
It a moving visit and again, regardless of one's politics, the horrors of war were very apparent.
Elaine and Suzie then treated us to a late lunch. In Vietnam many places to eat are on the pavements by the road where they cook up whatever you pick.
Lunch was surprisingly good and we loved the iced coffee. It was a good deal too! (150,000 VND for the four of us including drinks).
After saying goodbye, Rob and I then went to pick up some lovely breads from a great bakery we found yesterday called Tous Les Jours in readiness for our trip to the Mekong Delta tomorrow.
Saigon is bustling, very humid and large. The communication poles sprout hundreds (literally) of wires keeping the city in touch and the main junctions have mopeds side by side and end to end all vying for the same spot of road.
Today was another interesting day followed by a chilled dinner and an early night at the hotel watching a movie in readiness for our 7:30 pick up tomorrow.
I'm looking forward to the Mekong Delta and a night in the floating hotel before taking the fast boat to Cambodia on Saturday.
Hurrah for Vietnam = we have had a lovely time here.
