One of our ticks or bucket-list things on the trip was fly fishing in one of the big rivers of America. Just like in my favorite movie: The river runs through it.
We also wanted to visit Burchill britanies. (Luka's breeder). Bob Fluery is in Connecticut about 2 hours from New York. We took the train to New Haven and then rented a car to visit Bob and then head for the Catskill mountains to fish.
When we got at New Haven, big was our surprise so see it was also the home of Yale university. It is really a beautiful campus. Almost looks like Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Wouldn't mind to study again if I could do it here! After drinking a coffee we drove to Burchill. Meeting Bob was great, he is considered the father of Brittanies in Usa . And Brittanies is big in the Usa! I really learned a lot from him, well 40 years of experience with gundogs you know what works and not. We also saw Luka's grand dad,. And it was amazing to see the genetics (Eley looks just like her aunty Diamond)! Well I once again realized that we have some of the best dogs, and I really can't wait for the winter in SA to train and run my dog!
Off to Roscoe! We booked 2 nights in a log cabin in the mountains next to the legendary Beaverkill river in the Catskill mountain range. A nice fire place and a bottle of red wine in the cold. It was white from the winter snow! Really picturesque. I rented a rod and bought some flies at the angler shop in town. While I was there, a local farmer came in and he was very exited when he heard we are from South Africa. He told us that he saw some small nymph in the water yesterday and that today was a nice and sunny day, perfect for fishing. He then helped me to find a fly that we could cut to resemble the nymph that he saw and explained exactly how to fish with this improvised fly. This is what fly fishing is all about.
The river was really beautiful, see-through crystal clear, with ice and snow all around it! The technique is to find the slower deeper parts of the river. I tried a few different spots but with no luck. At least Alecha was there to keep good company and pour some coffee against the cold.
Even though I didn't catch any trout, it was really a wonderful experience to fly fish the legendary river of Roscoe.
