I made it! got out of my lovely bed at 4.30am and made it to the airport in time for a burger king croissant burger! what an invention- sausage egg and cheese in a croissant! Boarded the flight and we took off at 8.30. The flight was around eleven hours in a 767, and i managed to fit 5 films, my name is earl and some reading into that time! Half of the plane were wearing masks, obviously concerned about the swine flu, and when we arrived at Tokyo Narita airport, all of the staff had similar masks on, and there were doctors walking around with heat things to check if anyone arriving had a temperature. Getting into the country required filling in about 5 forms, having a retinal scan and being fingerprinted, but i finally made it. bought my train ticket for 1920 yen (over fifteen quid) for the 51 minute exact journey. The train was nice with reclingin seats, and all the announcements and signs were in English as well as Japenese! Had to change at Ueno, and i found the new station fine, but got stuck buying the ticket but a lovely girl came and helped me out! the metro trains were a bit manic, much like the london underground, if the underground were full of short japanese men in matching suits, and a bit more punctual (although my train was over 1 minute late-almost unheard of!) Got to my stop and had good instructions, found the hostel on foot in 5 mins. Had to take myshoes off to enter which is hard with your life strapped to your back, but i checked in and have a dorm to myself! went for a walk to find some more food, there are so many vending machines everywhere selling mainly drinks, they are outside every building! found a shop and relaised i couldnt read the cooking instructions so found some food i recognise! been up for far too long now so might leave the exploring any furthur until tomorow. So far so good language wise in Japan although the checkout girl did talk at me continuosly while i smiled back confusedly! My hostel is in Asukusa, a district of Tokyo with the largest Buddhist temple in, so think that might be the plan for tomorow morning, if i can find it! houses are not numbered in a row like most countries, but in the order they were made, so navigation may be a little tricky! Just drinking something that tastes and smells suspiciously like strawberry milkshake, but is an odd brown colour! hmmm
