Arrived at our hotel, which was really nice and even had a swimming pool for a change, had a quick shower and headed out for lunch with the whole of the group. Had a really tasty lunch in a small restaurant and tried lots of local specialities (the diet is really not going well, with all this lovely food). We walked around the old town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was so quiet (as they ban motorbikes from the town for most of the day) in comparison to other places we have visited and so pretty, this was my sort of place. The other great thing is this place is famous for its tailors, you go into a shop and look at pictures or describe what you want, choose the material and then they measure you to make the item specifically for you and it costs hardly anything!! We were all in heaven and all the girls ordered dresses, Alex had 4 shirts and a jacket made and Jake ordered 2 pairs of personalised shoes which had his name, date of birth and a replica of his tattoo on them!! When you are being measured you are quite manhandled, but we all were, including some people being told off about what underwear they were wearing (luckily this was not me)!! I ended up ordering 3 dresses, although when I went back for the fitting the next day 1 of them was nothing like I had asked for but I was happy with the other two, after a couple of alterations. The shopping here is amazing and it could be such a dangerous place if we were here for longer!!
In the evening we headed back to the old town for cocktails and dinner, again local dishes which were amazing, especially the fish cooked in a banana leaf which I had as aprt of a set menu which included banana and chocolate pancakes for desert! At night time all the lanterns in the town were lit up and it looked even prettier. By far my favourite place I have visited so far.
On our last day in Hoi An, Tina, Amy and I hired bikes and followed Dara out to the countryside surrounding Hoi An for a cycle tour. We stopped and looked at people working in the fields, harvesting the rice, saw a fish farm and some local organic farming (very simillar to allotments) and ended up by the beach for a lovely cold drink and a rest before cycling back to the hotel. After a swim and a chill out we headed back into town on our bikes (a lot quicker and cooler than walking) and looked around town, including the local market and shops, before being forced to wait inside a shop while there was a terrential downpour and a massive thunder storm. Luckily it did not last long and we were able to cycle back to our hotel.
In the evening we headed to a place where you make your own spring rolls and the owner then attempts to feed you!! The food was great again and we were all quite full but decided to head to an amazing place called Cargo for desert. This place has the most amazing cakes and Tina and I shared a passion fruit choclate cake, it looked so pretty it was a shame to eat it, but it also tasted amazing. Im glad I discovered this place on the last night as otherwise I would have been a permanent feature and would have had to sample all the cakes!!
An early night followed in preperation for ous bus journey to Hue in the morning!! Sad to leave Hoi An it really is such a lovely place and a few extra days to spend here would be lovely.
