The trip to Japan was a fairly painless ten-hour flight. After watching some movies, napping, and reading up on Tokyo, we were ready to go. Customs was a breeze, and we took the train to our neighborhood (from Narita Airport to K's Hostel in Asakusa). We had to transfer at Aoto station, where we honestly had no idea which train to take. We thought we knew based on the name of the line, but the details about the individual trains were all in Japanese characters (Kanji) and we weren't sure if we were going to be getting on the right one. A long train ride on the wrong express train could leave us far out in the suburbs, and that just did not sound appealling! But, in the end, we just hopped on a train that looked like it was going in the right direction...and we were right!
We ended up a few stops later at Kuramae (pronounced "koo-rah-mah-eh") station in the neighborhood of Asakusa (pronounced "os-koosa"). We are staying in a great place called "K's Backpackers Hostel." We have a nice, but VERY small, clean room, shared bath, and a very nice common area where other travellers congregate to catch up on their travels. The people that work here are tremendously nice, and they have helped us with our planning while in Tokyo.
We have already met a ton of people from all over: UK, Australia, Singapore, Bulgaria, and Canada. The hostel has been a great place to learn about other people's travels both in Japan and abroad.
We are going to head out, grab a bite, and try to figure out our plans while we're here in Tokyo.
