Beth and Clare's Big Adventure
Hi everyone,
Well, to bring closure on Thailand we thought a postcard was called for to sum up the last two weeks.
After writing our last postcard we hopped on a speed boat to take us over to Koh Pha Ngan for the full moon party. It was really choppy and we were bouncing all over the place, we could have swam and arrived there drier!!! It was a pretty cool evening. Drinks were sold in buckets (they dont seem to go out of their way to stop people getting very very drunk!) and after having a random guy approach us and inform us "Look guys my t*** are glowing!" we discovered you could buy UV paint and paint yourselves, so we went about making an investment in some pink paint and clad ourselves out in creative designs (with Ali asking me to draw a, erm, willy coming out his trousers and down to his angle). A few buckets later and Vince's dance moves were getting so wild that he ended up sending a drink flying out a lady's hand (she wasn't too impressed so we swiftly moved onto the next bar!). At 4am Vince, Issy, Ali and I decided to head back. But after half an hour wait for the boat along with at least 50 other people, we realised if we were going to get ourselves onto that boat we'd need to be ruthless. When the boat arrived everyone began wondering out into the sea like zombies so that they could be the first to get on. But soon there were so many people trying to clamber on any way possible that the boat began to get pushed out even further to sea. Soon we were up to our waists in the water and people were pushing and screaming to get on. And THEN, even once everyone had squeezed onto the boat, we found that it had taken so long that the boat had in fact run aground and we sat there for 20 minutes before the boat was even able to get moving. Eventually after a very rough ride back where we were convinced that we were going to die, we reached Koh Samui and arrived back at our hotel just in time for the sun to rise at 6am. What a night!
A few days later Oli headed home. Then there were 5! We continued on to Koh Tau by bus and then boat. It's much quiter here but really nice. We stayed in a hotel run by two crazy ladies (one possibly a man, cant be entirely sure!), and hired out scooters. Alasdair, despite not yet being able to drive a car, decided it would be a good idea to hire out a manual. And after a few hours learning how to drive it he just about grasped how to start it (but not how to stop and then restart it) and could therefore never stop. So the day was spent with us stopping at various points to admire the view whilst Ali would zoom past yelling "I can't stop, catch me up!!!" leaving only a trail of dust! Good one Ali. This day was then topped off with Ali stalling on his way up a hill and then crashing the motorbike whilst trying to avoid an oncoming car. And a following 30 pound fine, "Nice one Ali!"
Clare, Vince, Ali and I also hired out a boat for one day with a driver to take a trip round the island, deciding to ignore the bad weather. This was probably the first mistake we made because as we headed off to our first destination we already had half the sea in our boat and were soaked to the skin. After a bit of snorkelling and shark spotting at different bays our driver suggested we may want to head back before dark and warned us that once we rounded the other side of the Island thing might get a little choppy. And he wasn't joking!!! We took precautionary measures-namely wrapping ourselves in towels and putting on the snorkelling goggles to stop the salt water getting in our eyes as out little wooden boat was thrown around by 2 metre waves! And got a little concerned when the driver had to ask us to change seats to that the boat wouldn't capsize!!! Amazingly we made it back in one piece, if not a little wet.
A few days later we trekked up to Bangkok by boat and then a surprisingly swanky coach. And 10 hours later, Bob's your Uncle, we were there! We flagged down 2 tuk tuks to take us to our hotel, whose drivers thought it would be fun to race each other there, so we had a very fast (if not slightly dangerous) ride to our hotel.
Soon it was time for Vince and Ali to fly home. And then there were 3! With the boys gone it was time for a little culture (and a lot of shopping). So the next day we had an early morning to meet a Mr Chatree who would drive us 2 hours to the floating market. This was pretty cool. We had a boat all to ourselves and while being driven around the market were able to see all the cultural products on sale (and some not so cultural, aka Louis Vuitton bags and Pot Noodles!)
A few days later and we very nearly missed our flight to Hong Kong, after turning off the alarm which went off three times. But we made it. And now here we are in Hong Kong, and loving it. So we shall write a postcard very soon to tell you about it. We hope you're all ok and staying out of trouble. We miss everyone.
Lots of Love Beth, Clare and Issy xxx
