Beth and Clare's Big Adventure
Hi everyone,
We've had numerous complaints from people (namely all parents-and Charlie Bown!) for not updating our beautiful website so for those concerned, we're all alive and have managed to enter and leave Bali without being thrown in jail or blown up so its all peachy our end!
After leaving Cairns, the boys flew staright to Bali on the exact same route Miss Corby took. After a slight scare when Oli's luggage didn't arrive on the conveyer belt, they managed to track down its whereabouts and he was able to collect it the next day with no trace of drungs to be found in it anywhere-yipee! We flew to Singapore for just one night which gave us just long enough to take full advantage of the amazing accomodation which we found ourselves in, offering us FREE internet, FREE tea and coffee and general brand spanking new facilities (namely a power shower which I will remeber till the day I die).
The next day we flew to Bali and arrived safely to a very cushty hotel. We stayed here for 3 pounds a night which provided us with a massive room, ensuite, air conditioning, a balcony and much more. We also found that the boys previous visit to Bali had been a beneficial one since they turned out to be buddies with half of Kuta allowing us to get a lot of things for free. We never ate a meal over a pound (our large breakfasts only costing us 50p!), we would have all our laundry washed dried, folded, packaged (and occasionally shrunk!) for a mere 2 pounds, and between us we took the liberty of buying 350 dvds for 15p each. It was about then that we realised the wonder of shopping in Bali, and quite how far our money could go. At which point we made it our mission to do as much shopping as humanly possible. We realised we had indeed suceeded when it came to packing at th end of our stay and even after giving away a big bag of unpackable clothes we found ourselves with four bags of hand luggage and a bulging backpack each (luckily our wit and charisma charmed us through customs...cough cough!!)
While in Bali we also went to Waterbom (their water park) where on our second visit we tried to get Vince in on discount price (because he had genuinely lost his second day pass). However you could say we weren't entirely successful as after two attempts to sneek him in (including Oli scaling numerous walls) we were found out by the manager. Unfortunately Oli took the defensive approach and insisted what we had done was within their policy and that if the manager did not let Vince in, he would, and we quote, "f**k all over them", to which the manager did not take kindly and threatened to call the police. So we took the 30% discount and ran! But once in we had a brilliant time, and Clare even managed to force me in to what she said would be the last activity I was unsure about, and threw me down the "SMASH DOWN" (which does exactly what it says in the name!)
Clare and I also went white water rafting with two of the grumpiest Scottish lasses we've ever met. However this didnt dishearten us (infact it made us want them to fall in the river more!) and we had a great time (despite the 300 steps we had to scale at the end).
Vince and I went horse riding along the coast, with only one other lady (a 33 year old pot smoking primary school teacher called Natalie....who was lovely), and we saw Bat caves, a temple, and Balinese villages. And also got to wade through an extremely deep river (with me getting carried away taking photos and leading my horse off a ledge in the water so that it nearly drowned-whoops!)
One evening all four of us decided to go to Uluwatu Temple to see the sun set and a few monkeys, which was really pretty and where we got to wear some highly attractive sarongs. Vince angered the monkeys slightly by blocking their path to their food but was quick as a cat when they tried to attack.
And last but by no means least Clare, Vince and I learnt to surf which was all going swimmingly until Vince was rather special and managed to sprain his ankle causing it to blow up to the size of a small water melon and putting him out of action for the rest of the holiday.
We timed out visit to Bali quite well as it coincided with the Kuta Carnival (Summer of Fun - basically any excuse for a party) so got to watch a lot of skateboarding, bmx and DJ competitions on the beach. We also discoverd if there's anything you want, and we mean ANYTHING, then Bali streets are your place to go. As during our visit we were offered everything from "plaaaaaaaaaaite your haaaaaiiiiiirrr", to "masssaaaaaaage" to "little girls, little boys" to Vince being offered "Viagraaaaaaaa" all said in annoying whiney voices.
So in Conclusion, Bali is an absolutely lovely country with lovely people and damn good shopping, if not a slightly dangerous place at times. But we'll most certainly be going back. Clare and I are in Singapore now where we'll be for three days and meeting Issy and Katie on our last day. Then its off to Thailand for four weeks, and we cant wait. We hope you're all enjoying yourselves and probably getting more sun than we are with the heat our parents have been bragging about. Email us all soon coz we're missing you. Not long till we're home now.
Lots of Love Beth, Clare, Oli and Vince xxxxxxxx
