We are heading to The Highlands. As we departed Edinburgh we saw the house in which Alexander Graham Bell was born, the area in which JKR Rowling wrote Harry Potter and some of the buildings that inspired her writing.
Having left Edinburgh we headed for the old town of St Andrews - the home of golf, the ruins of the early St Andrews Cathedral and the St Andrews University (one of the UK's largest and prestigious), where both Prince William and Kate Middleton attended and their romance was kindled.
From St Andrews we set off for Pitlochry where we saw a hydro-electric station with a salmon ladder to assist the salmon navigate the dam on their annual migration upstream.
A short drive from Pitlochry took us to Blair Castle - a 15th century castle founded by the Murray clan of Scotland. This is a fairy-tale type castle where you expect Rapunzel to be at an upstairs window letting her long hair drop to the ground. Parts of the building have been opened to the public whilst the remainder is still used by the current Duke and Lady Murray.
After Blair Castle we drove on to our base for the next 2 nights - Laggan where we are staying at a roadside hotel where we enjoyed a beautiful meal and stunning views while we sat beside an open fire. This area was used as much of the setting for the TV series The Monarch of the Glen.
