We left hotel at 8:30am for a walking tour of York and saw key points of historical interest:
- remnants of the town wall
- the old Guild Hall (circa 1400)
- the Barley Hall (circa 1400)
- the Shambles (a medieval term for butcher shop)
- models of Cats on windows, walls & roofs - a local superstition
- Guy Fawkes' house (with fire insurance medallion)
- sweets stores galore
- York Minster (circa 1080AD)
We left York bound for Edinburgh. Lunch at The Swan pub at Haddon-on-the-wall near remnants of Hadrian's Wall.
Moving along we stopped for photos at ruins of the Jedburgh Abbey founded by the Augustinians in 12th century.
Between York and Edinburgh the scenery ranges from wooded hills, moors, rolling grassy hills and pasture cultivation. The further north we went heather became more prevalent and is just starting to bloom.
We then travelled to Edinburgh arriving 5:30pm. A quick change and we were off to a traditional Scottish dinner (yes - they "piped in the haggis!" and show at historic Prestonfield (built 1687).
