Day 11 - She said: Wow! The last day of our adventure, already.
We started our day with a turbo breakfast before our 40 KM drive to Pirque for our wine tour at Concha y Toro.
When we arrived, it was easy to see that the grounds would be gorgeous, and they did NOT disappoint. We had a fabulous guide who taught us some of the history of the winery and the family, and led us on a tour that passed by the old family mansion, some vines, a cellar where wine is aged in French and American oak barrels, and a deeper cellar, where the higher end wines are aged. While in this deeper cellar, we learned a bit about the perfect conditions that it provies for aging the wine. We also learned that, in order to deter thieves, the original owner of the winery told people that the devil himself lurked in this deep cellar, and it worked due to the superstitions of the locals.
At the winery, we tasted a beautiful Chardonnay (which I normally don't like), and a Carmenere, which is a grape that is unique to Chile. It was originally brought over from France and planted in Chile. After that, there was a pest in France that killed off all of the Carmenere vines, but that is not present in Chile. Also important to note - it's tasty.
After the tasting, we went for a lovely beef lunch and pisco sours, and were returned back to the hotel where we had stayed the night before. We wandered around, stopped at a cafe, wandered some more, and generally fell in love with the city in an afternoon.
Leaving is bittersweet, and we are already hoping to come back to see more of Chile, in particular, as we didn't have as much time in the country as we did in Argentina. So....until next time.
