Arrived in Ho Chi Minh on 13th after a whole day of flying, completely shattered by the time we got here, had to wait about an hour to check in to our hostel, PP Guesthouse, so had a stroll around town, found a cafe and sat down for a drink. Was very surprised when flying jn how built up the city actually was, was expecting it to be much smaller! Guest house is very impressive for £8 a night, hot water...fridge...air con...cable TV...big bed, definitely recommend to anybody! First taste of Vietnamese food for dinner, meat and fish spring rolls dipped in fish sauce, fried noodles with beef and lots of vegatables, washed down with a couple of green Saigon beers, all for around £4, perfect dinner, hit a few bars around town and watched the night life come alive, on route back stopped for a much needed foot and leg massage, 40 minutes of pure heaven, (100,000dong £3) started falling in love with Ho Chi Minh already! Next day decided to tackle the city by foot armed with a map and our wits which you need a lot of when stepping out onto the street with thousands of motorbike's wizzing past, but here is the trick to it, walk out very slowly and they actually swerve around you, and it actually worked! Started to walk to the war remnants museum, about half hour away, but was told we was headed the wrong direction by a man selling coconut drinks, who pointed us in the right direction, so we brought one of his delicious drinks, which was much needed and very refreshing. Found the museum which had some very impressive tanks, helicopters and armoury on show plus a lot of pictures and information about what happened in the vietnam war and the aftermath, quite horrific at times unfortunately. Headed back down to visit Ben thanh market, stopped for my first coffee which Vietnam is apparently famous for, so went for a motherland coffee, very spicy, gave you a kick like I've never tasted before, no sleeping after that for sure! Got to the market which was inside a huge warehouse and coming to an end and turning into a night market, which was quite fascinating to see transform in front of us, it turned from a normal street into a bustling market within half hour, picked a stall and had some dinner! Booked up to go see the cu chi tunnels outside of Saigon for the day, bus arrived at 8am so went for breakfast before, had my first bowl of pho (beef noodle soup) washed down with a white coffee, then onto the bus for the two hour bus journey to ch chi, stopped to see a miday prey by caoda people, a new religion, only 2 million followers, very interesting to see! On to cu chi tunnels, see how the cu chi people fought against the Americans in the war, digging under ground to hide, some 6 meters down and more than 200km long, it 20 years of digging, very costrophobic when crawling trough, had to escape at the first exit! Booked up Mekong day tour and booked out of hostel..... Next stop De lat!
