Oh boy... The last few days have been both seriously fun, incredible and insanely s***e at the same time :(
We eventually left Hue - after having to spent an extra day there when 2 bikes gave out again just as we were leaving. The bike fellowship is slowly but surely failing... Spencer's Minsk has died a predictable death and was sent back on a train to Hanoi, where hopefully it will be sold for at least something. So we set out from Hue the day before yesterday with spencer on the back of Josh's bike.
The ride from Hue to Hoi An (where I am now) was incredible. We went east out of Hue to ride down the peninsula and over some awesome bridges to make it back to highway 1 - lining ourselves up for the famous Hai Van Pass that the Top Gear lads cruise. The views were out of this world as we climbed an almost empty winding mountain road, weaving through the cliffs. One of the best experiences so far - and I had my helmet action camera on the whole time capturing the whole thing! We came down from the mountains and came into Vietnam's 2nd largest City - Danang. by this time we'd got split up - spencer and Josh had stopped just to get the bike checked up - nothing serious (as a first). Me and Nick did the final stretch to Hoi An, having to ask 3 different people directions to make it out of Danang. With about 10km to go, Nick's bike coughed and ran out of gas, luckily right next to a gas station. I took this opportunity to detatch my helmet cam to see if I could fit it anywhere point at me as I rode - in hindsight, I REALLY wish I hadn't. After realiseing there wasnt anywhere easy to fit it on the bike, I set it down on a table I was parked next to and began packing the straps away into the bag. Nick came back from the station and set off almost immediately. I was distracted, and threw the bag back into my saddlebags - I left the camera, sitting there on a table by the road - a gift to some lucky random vietnamese. :'( Kinda ruined the day - so much footage from Africa, Thailand and biking though Vietnam is all lost - none of it backed up. IDIOT!!! :(
However - Hoi An is beautiful. Yesterday we visited the very same tailor that The Top Gear crew visit - got measure up and discovered that this particular tailor is the most expensive in town. :P No new suits for Beno. But we rented some scooters for the dayso we didnt have to bother about our bikes etc, and headed straight for the beach! An aweseom one at that! Like in the photo, there are loads of these bowl shaped boats dotted along the sand (which is too hot to walk on). Hitting the sea water was one of the best feeling so far! :D Top Notch.
We've had a lush time in Hoi An - met some wicked Vietnamese people - wondered through the narrow alleys and had the local delicacy - Seafood Wontons washed down with local Bia Hoi on ice.
First thing tomorro - were getting up at 4am to go to My Son - a world heritage site just outside Hoi An with old city ruins - hopefully to atch the sunset there.
The sad thing is tho - tomorro - the fellowship breaks up :'( Time has cought up with Josh and Nick and Spencer no longer has a bike! Nick and Spencer are taking the bus to Nha Trang, Josh is Biking it - and I want to go back into the highlands.... I just have to find some more people that want to do the same thing I guess.
We shall see..... Anyway - on saturday I have exactly 1 month left in Vietnam.
