Last Days of the UK
April - May 2010
This was really our last chance to earn some cash to fund our big summer adventure (and to get back what we'd lost from our volcano trip), so we were dedicated to doing nothing and working. We were concerned that being the last term of the academic year, we were going to be hard pressed to get some work. Luckily for me I had been booked for the full 6 weeks, and a challenging (then again, all London schools are challenging!!) school. I was not prepared to knock back the work though. Dan also had a couple of weeks lined up too.
The school I was at was tough, but I really enjoyed it. A really friendly maths department; it's amazing how much the people you work affect how much you like a job. Dan also managed to work every day at various schools for the whole half term too. Lots of money in the bank account for us.
Apart from a few nights out with Matt and Jodie and both sets of their visiting parents we really didn't get up to much in our last 6 weeks here. We did a spot of last minute souvenir shopping in London, and basically just organised everything that needs to be done before we set off for our summer trip.
We also did a day trip to Cambridge. We chose a Saturday afternoon with the most gorgeous spring weather. We spent the day checking out all the beautiful old colleges; although we couldn't get into many because they were closed due to exams. We did manage to get into the impressive Kings College Chapel, and into the grounds of a few others. We soaked up the sun in the afternoon in an area called "The Backs"; a big grassy area at the back of a number of college. We enjoyed watching people go up and down the river 'punting'. It's a boating technique, which obviously takes a bit to master - it involves putting a big stick into the muddy riverbed and propelling the boat. We watched many novices crash boats into each other (it was a warm day so the river was quite crowded with boats) and the bridges, some fell in, while many others left their poles lodged into the river and had to back peddle to retrieve them.
We enjoyed an ice cream before picking up some souvenirs and jumping on the train back to London.
We are off to Egypt tomorrow for a 9 day tour, before returning back to London for 4 days to finish packing, shipping and organising. Then the massive summer adventure begins, before finally getting back. Just to make you all jealous, after Egypt we're heading to Turkey, Greece, Belgium (For Rock Werchter again), Switzerland, German, Austria, Czech Rep, Poland, Hong Kong, then finally back to Melbourne!!!
I've put up the blog you've all been asking for, the Volcano Enforced European Adventure - it's under Croatia, Dubrovnik if you're looking…. Also, I've put up a few new photo albums (For those who haven't already seen them on facebook). I've added, Korcula, Dubrovnik, and our Volcano Adventure albums…
Hopefully the blogs over summer won't be as lengthy for you guys to read, and more importantly for me to write…
(P.S. This blog is now into it's THIRD word document. Whenever I hit 100 pages I start a new one because it just ends up taking wayyy too long to load up… I've like almost written a novel!)
