We arrived in Hervey Bay at about 3pm and checked into Palace Hostel. Our room here was really cool, rather than just dorms and one kitchen it was set out in units. We were in unit 4, downstairs was a living room, kitchen, bathrooms and 2 dorms then upstairs was about 4 more dorms and another bathroom. We realised they did this so that each unit was filled with everyone on the same fraser trip.
At 4 we had to meet in reception for our briefing for the trip and were then pilled in the bus to go alcohol and food shopping for the weekend.
As there were already 4 of us, 2 other girls. Tamara and Bella joined with us to share food to make it easier to cook all the same food. Alcohol was of course more goon.
Back at the hostel we made pizza and had a chilled night all sat in the lounger area chatting.
Fraser Island
We were up at 6am to check out for the trip. First stop was to watch a incredibly boring safety dvd which sent us all back to sleep and then we went and packed up all the cars ready to go.
In our car was me and James, Jody and Kyle, Amrita and Jason also from Canada then Tamara from Swiszerland and Bella from Germany. James had the first drive to the harbour but even that was fun we had the music turned up all dancing and singing.
We took a barge over to the island which took about half hour. For some reason everyone decided that I should be the first to drive but wow it was so scary. The roads were insane its all just sand and hills and the car was sverving everywhere, going over the bumps the car literally goes flying. Proper 4 wheel driving. I was so scared and just screamed all the way round. It was so funny.
The first stop was one of the lakes. The boys were straight in playing ball. (James is so please with himself for buying the ball, he finally has a group of other lads with the excitement of a 5 year old) As for us girls, once again the sand was silica so we all sat in our little spa area exfoliating and topping up our tan. The lake was fresh water so you could drink it whilst laying in it. Becasue it is a natinal park though they can't sell the water but apparently its some of the best??
We all got chance to take it in turns to do the driving and it was just mental, we deffinatly had the best group and car, we had radio and speakers for the ipod so had a party playlist on the go so were driving round singing to Abba and all sorts of music.
The next stop was for a walk around the rainforest and stopped for lunch in one of the picnic areas. You cant have food any where else other than the allocated areas on the island because of the wild dingos that are everywhere.
Next stop was Lake Wabby. This was a good half hour hike up the hills but twhen we got there it was just huge sand dunes for miles. The lake was right at the bottom of one so we were all running and rolling down looking like a right set of crazy idiots. We were there a good few hours so again whilst the boys were doing mad dives running down the dunes we got in some extra tanning time.
from here we drove to our camp site for the weekend. The driving is deffinatly the best part if the trip, at times the car is literally flying through the air its just mental.
The campsite, well it was a campsite I took one look at was adamant I would'nt last a night. It was a few tents and a trailer that unfolded with a cooker, sink and hob and then some planks of wood rested on up turned crates covered in a sheet incase it rained. He sent us off to pick our tents. First tent I opened a huge spider sat in the middle waiting to great us. (this was what I thought was a huge spider but oh how I was to find out I was so wrong) From that point that was it I was sleeping int he car and it didnt take long for jody to clain the other seat in the car. James was also petrified but tried to be the macho one and offer to sleep in the tent with Kyle (secrelty we knew how scared he was but we didnt let on straight away).
For dinner that night we had taken things for a BBQ so the lads got on cooking that while the girls did the nice job of making the salad, setting the table and getting out the goon.
Dinner was so good and the drink was soon flowing. This was the only way most of would be able to sleep by been filled with booze. Everyone was on edge though and jumping and thrashing around at every little bug. At one point one of the girls turned to James and said OH MY GOD, he went flying and screamed loud enough for the whales to hear, every one was in histerics at his little show.
Eventually we got the cards out and played hours of drinking games. The funniest part was going to the toilet as there was no such thing. You had a spade and a dingo stick and had to go dig a hole in 2's so the other could fight the dingo off if you saw one. It wasn't fun at the time but now we always end up in stitches talking about it. We went round to the see the other group and found Lisa and Jo from our Avatar trip so they came and joined our games as our group was so much better.
By the end of this we were all really drunk and when it came to bed time me and Jody snuggled up in our car whilst everyone froze in their tents.
It must have been a good sleep, apparently geoff the guide was walking around banging a pan and spoon but we didnt wake up till the door was opened and he was tickleing my feet. We didnt like to rub it in how good our sleep was because everyone was saying how little they slept and how cold they were. We were so happy inside.
Breakfast was like feeding time at the zoo, people still drunk assembling lunch and breakfast for the day. We had to make toast the old fashioned was, holding it over the flame on the hob. Dont no how you old folkd could be bothered, second round I had jam sandwhich.
Anyway, after an hour we were finally ready and excited to hit the beach and our day of adventures. This didnt last long. Clever James got dressed and used the roof of the car as his wardrobe so of course as we hit the beach off they flew. We stopped so Jay could run out and get them and thats when it happened........ SCREAMING, SHOUTING, SWEARING........ the wost day of my life, a spider easily the size of my head was walking over the driver side window that was closed onto my fully open window! All I saw were the legs and every one screaching to shut the window, at the same time still in my seat belt I was trying to scramble over Bella onto Jay to try get out of the car. They sound from our car was deafening, the other car pulled up and Geoffs car reversd to see what the hell was going on. Eventually it got round to the bonnet and Geoff killed it. Later we were to find out he has never seen one so big on one of his trips. Perfect. The next 2 hours were pure hell, the tiniest little bug, bit of hair, touch of skin, bag anything had us all frantically jumping around screaming. James was so funny as hwe really does give it his all when he screams. Even as I write this im laughing as it was sooooo funny but not at the time. Later on the other car were saying how funny it was to see the car shaking and bodies flying around inside. Just a shame we ddint get to appreciate the funny side.
So everntually we set off, of course James also left his belt on the roof so when that flew off we decided stupidly not to stop after the whole spider thing, but he regrets it now as his trousers are so big so can hardly wear any of them with no belt.
Eventually we were off cruising along the beach and it was just so much fun. All day we were singing and dancing about in the car untill we reached the first stop off that was the Champagne pools. As we walked up and over the cliff to them we could see a tiger shark swimming in the sea below us it was so cool.
We stayed there for a couple of hours chilling on the beach and in the pools, as it was more like a big rock pool. The water was so clear and refreshing to cure the hangover.
Next stop was Orchid beach for lunch....mmmmmm melted cheese sandwhiches and crisps. Not the best but oh well, I guess this is real life camping.
Third stop was Indian Head. The reason it is named this is beacuase was what ever his name is that found Oz sailed passed he saw aborigionies standing on the top but presumed they were Indians. Anyway we hiked up the rocks to get to the to and what a view, you could see for miles. Over the edges of the rocks you could see a huge huge group of Jelly fish and i'm taking 1000's and 1000's and then looking down the shore you could see them all washed up along the beach. After a while of waiting we finally saw whales. Ther in season till beginign of Novemeber, At first you see the water as they blow it up followed by them jumping out of the water. They were pretty far away but close enough to say that we have seen whales. We watched the too pods for ages before we set off back down to the beach.
From there we went ot the Pinnacles but me and JOdy sent James up with the camera as we had to find somewhere to go to the toilet and both couldnt not be bothered to climb anymore.
Now it was time to go back to the dreaded camp, all scared of the prospects of more spiders. So what better way to cure our fear by getting straight on the goon. We had pasta for tea tonight and the boys cooked up the left over sausages and made up some salad. Once again we had a really good tea. Tonight was seen as the better night as we didnt have to rush to get up in the morining. Geoff even got involed with the games tonight aswell. It started off with card games and then geoff whipped out some planks off wood and set up beer pong and flippy cup competions. Before long even half the other camp where round and it was just another crazy night. I kind of missed half of this as I was so tired I fell asleep on the table for half the night. Tonight James and Bella joined me and Jody for the 5* car expereince.
The morning after the night before. I once again passed out and slept the whole night and awoke to Kyle clambereing in to the back of the van me and James were in. He was hilarious as he was still so drunk. Basically Bob, one of the other lads got into kyles tent because he was too drunk to find his own, threw up everywhere and then left so kyle had no other option but to sleep upright in the front of the other van. The funniest bit was when he saw how far our front seat reclined he was devestated but so funny. So eventually the rest of the camp arose and what a funny sight everyone looked so rough. We couldnt wait for Bob to get up to give him some abuse. One of the really quite girls (never even realised she was in our group) was saying how one of the other girls (again didnt even know she existed) had thrown up in her tent. This was even funnier as she was so embarrased that she sat head in hands hiding round the back of the tent looking extremely pale, well untill word got out and Geoff had her cleaning it out. We did want to feel sorry for her but it was just too funny.
Finally we were all packed up and ready for our final day at Lake Mckenzie. Poor sick girl was throwing upout the window as we sped along the crazy roads. Today we didnt half get air in the car we were flying over the bumos it was great.
Lake Mckenzie once again off the boys went while us girls set up our little spa area to exfoliate which the silica sand. This was followed by a group hairwash as the sand makes your hair really soft. We all sat in a line doing each others which was hilarious.
Before long it was time to leave Fraser and head back to hervey bay. The idea of a shower was just amazing. We even got to stop off at the pie shop on the way back so we were all super happy.
Arriving back in Palace we all ran down to our unit and this was the best shower I had ever had, the water was black. I spent a good hour moisturising, paiting nails and plucking it was fab.
At 6.30 a bus came and picked us all up and took us to a pub for our farewell meal with Geoff and the group. Not that anyof us wanted alchol the beers were soon flowing.
So thats the Fraser trip over and done with = ( it was the by far the bext trip anbd we met some of the nicest people. Cant believe its over already but hey ho off to Noosa we go!
