Well the dreaded bus was actually not so bad, we had booked cama seats, so they pretty much reclined into bed amd wher alot wider than a regular bus seat. We both slept most of the night followed by watching films in Spanish and staring at the never ending desert. The only bad things was that we had only 1 15 minute break in the whole 24 hours, next time will need a pencill to re draw are backsides on with.
SO we arrived and were both in a little bit of shock as we woke up and honestly felt like we had driven to the moon. There was literally nothing but mountains, sand and rocks as far as you could see, from every direction. We both looked at each other a little like, what the hell have we come here for. That feeling never really changed as we got off the bus and got a taxi to our hostel, it really didnt change, just little mud huts lining the streets.
We were staying at Hostel Iquisa, again a really random little pace, just a few rooms going off a sandy and dusty courtyard.
Thank goodness, as we checked in so did 2 Irish girls and a german couple and we also met Lois, a girl who had been staying there already. We all seemed to have the same inpressions of this place so all stuck together.
We all went into town and then us and Daniel and Miriam had the inention of booking the trip to Uyuni to do the salt flats tour. Lois reccomedned us a company that she had booked with however when we sat and listened to him he pretty much talked us out of the trip.
So anyway, that night we all met and went to a really nice restaurant for pizza and drinks. We were all so tired after our long bus though we didnt last long.
The worst day of our trip so far
So we both woke up in not the best moods, we were fed up and really the first time we had wabted to go home. As we had got up Daniel and Miriam had been and looked and found a better company to do our trip with, kindly the had also reserved us a space meaning we had to rush into town to sort it out.
So to save a boring long paragraph basically we had a nightmare with bank cards, tryignt to book the trip, pay for the bus on top of our fed up moods. It was the firt time today I skyped home and cried and would have given many limbs to have been home that day. Anyway, the day was soon to get worse.
So we went into town to get our supplies for the trip, as we were in a shop all the electric went off and we could here the most ferrousious thunder we had ever heard. The dogd were going crazy and people in the shops, you could tell new something we didnt. We were advised to get back to our hostel asap.
So off we went, a little storm, no problem. If only ew knew what would happen next.
SO off I went in the shower, not really too fussed about running back through the courtyard, it was only rain. As I walke dout of the bathroom the courtyard was a good few inches under water. I got in the room an joked to James, if were not carefull we´ll be flooded later. Hahaha funny joke, NOT. As I sat on the floor with all my bags emptied trying to pack for the trip water started gushing under the door, i literally thre everthing on the bed and atacked the other girl on the top bunk to get her stuff. Within 10 minutes the water was a good few inches and was not stopping. Panicking the 3 of uss wedge the door with the blankets off the bed. This helped a little. he wtaer outside the room was getting really quite deep and we were worried as no one else was in to protect their things. We climbed out of the window to get to Dan and miriams room but was too late there room was flooded as with ll their bags on the floor. We were so lucky as we were the only ones in the hostel (well other than Chileans).
It didnt stop raining for hours and as we tried to empty the water from the room with a pan it was pointless, everyone was out in the courtyard desperatl trying to dig ways for the water to get out but it was impossible, we even tryed filling the sink, toilet nd shower tray before it got too bad.
After a few hours tha rain stopped but our efforts of clear up went well into the night. It took 5 hours of filling buckets, digging and making dams before the rooms were dry and the courtyard was no longer a lake. To let the water out the had to flood the main reception as there was no other way for the water to drain.
We had thought it was pretty bad but were in hysterical laughter the whole time as it just topped off our day. We didnt realise quite how bad intull around 11pm the group that had been on a trip startd to slowly come back. The only road in and out of San Pedro had been washed away there was a huge emergency evacuation. Firebrigade army and all sorts to help peopl of the 5 mtr gap in the road. We couldnt belive it when the told us, it had been woman and children first and had to walk over an hour in pitch black to get home.
Have to say it really wasnt our day. Lets hope the trip is better.
