We arrived in Mendoza and 2.30a, after a good 4 hours delay crossing the border from Chile. The drive was insane as you go over the Andes mountain range. To go up the mountain it is just one huge windy road each corner numbers what curve it was and we got into the 30´s it was so high.
Anyway, we had booked a private dorm here so just a little bunk bed for us as the whole noisy snoringness is driving us mad.
That morning we woke and enjoed the really nice free breakfast. The hostel is called Hostel Empedrado and is so nice. A lovely courtyard with grapes growing over the canopy, a little pool, roof terrace, tv room and free wine each night.
We went and walked around the town that day and then took our selfs out for our first proper steak as our Valentines treat. Firsth though the hostel did a free wine tasting so we did that and then went a nd found a really nice restuarant for our steak.
Wowser it was huge, I got a steak with a sauce so it was a smaller but James was about 3 inches think. We finished it off with a bottle of red, which to my delight James is starting to like.
Day 2
Today was wine tasting and I have looked forward to this for so long. We had opted for the driven tour as apose to theone where you cycle as we heard about how amazing the food was.
We went to 3 wineries, a large and more comercial one, an organic one and then a family owned one. At each place they showed us how the wine was made and explaind the ways in which you get different tastes in the wine etc. Then you got on to the best part, the tasting.
You all know what me and James are like, not the most civilised people or serious in anyway. When they were saying ´read the expressions of the wine, how do you feel, what are the expereinces of the wine in your mouth, what fruit do you taste, can you pull out the spices and the oakiness´, we just looked at each other and said, they all taste and look the same. The guy was one of these long hair fancy guys going on about wine tasting being an art, pfffft we just wanted the free wine.
Towards the end of the day though it was hilarious, James was like hmmm Yes I can taste this can you, we just laughed, dont think its in our nature to be all fancy shmancy about wine. James got a tasting for Shiraz though so we found that much out.
The best part of the day was dinner time to soak up some of the wine. We entered the room in the restaurant and our mouths hit the floor. A hugeeeee table set up with an absolute feast of Tapas food. Hundreds of little bowls with every kind of food you could imagine. Big wooden boards with meats, chorizos then others with cheese bread an olives. Ah we were in heaven and that was only the apetiser. We had never ending wine throught out lunch and then had rice, and spag bol. To finish we were taken out side for huge icecream sundays. Yummy, by far the best food we have eaten yet.
We have stayed 5 nights in Mendoza but the rest of the time we have either chilled by the pool or laid in the lounge, not only to relax but to save our self some money as we are on the verge of running out. Last night we had a pizza party with unlimited pizza and now today were heading off to Buenos Aires....See you there!
