Becky Bravo's Adventures
(Just so you know before you read this, this is the first of 4 updated blogs, so be sure you get to all of them, they are filled with fun stuff and pictures!) The first day of safari was basically a lot of traveling but it was still fun. I had to wake up at 6:45 am to get breakfast and make sure everything was ready. We left the dock area around 8am and went to the airport. The airports pretty much run the same way as the do in the states, except here you could take liquids on board with you which is good because we couldn't check any baggage. The way you got on the planes were interesting though. There was no jet way, you would just give your ticket to the agent and walk outside to a shuttle type thing which brought you to the plane and you just walked up stairs to the plane. The flight was 2 hours to Durban, and I would like to tell you how it was, but I fell asleep even before the plane took off. Once we got off the plane, we met with our safari guides and got in vans and drove for 2 hours from there. We then just had a pit stop and proceded to drive for about 2 more hours to the gate of the game reserve. Then it was just under 2 hours to the actual camp. The place that we were was called Kwazulu-Natal, and the game reserve was call the Imfolozi game reserve. We were literally in the middle of nowhere. On the drive to the camp we saw zebras, an elephants, giraffes, baboons, and impala. It was freaking awesome. It is so different to see these creatures in the wild, and not in a zoo. When we got to the camp, we ate dinner which was amazing. Our cook there, (they called her Mama Cook) was awesome. It was the best vegetarian lasagna ever. Then we got settled in our tents and it was pretty rustic. There was no electricity (we did have a little light in our tent though) and there were just 8 beds per tent. We were told to bring clothes for hot and cold weather, but it was just hot. Like intensely hot. Even at midnight it was sticky and sweaty. We couldn't even use blankets. But it was fun. Before we went to bed we just hung around the campfire and were able to see some rhinos down by the river just below our camp drinking water. It was pretty sweet. But we were all so tired from all the traveling that we went to bed, or tried to go to bed, it was kind of hard to get comfortable to sleep in such hot weather. But our day started at about 5:30 am the next day.
