So we got into Miami late last night, and arrived at our Air BnB safely. Hayley, Jesse, and Sue and Gerry (pronouced like Gary) were waiting in our room for us to greet us. We roomed with Hayley and Jesse to save on money, and our room is awesome. The building we are staying is crazy tall, like 50 stories, and has not one, but 4 Penthouse floors, and we are staying in the floor above that! It is called TS, I am assuming it stands for Top Story? Who knows.
Anyways, today, the 6 of us went to Little Havana to do a short city/food tour. The cool thing was the tour company that led it was Intrepid Travel, the same company Jaime and I used when we went to India and Iceland! Our guide's name was Carlos, and he was great. He walked us around, showed us great bars, a cigar shop, how they made the cigars, freaking sweet street art, and little local markets and restauarants where we got to try some local treats. He explained a lot about Little Havana and the Cuban culture. We ended the tour at a bar known for its Mojitos, and drank a few there before venturing out on our own. I included some photos of us. The tour included people outside of our group as well.
After the tour was over, we went to a bar/restaurant to eat and I also got some churros nearby. The food and snacks and especially the drinks were so delicious. After eating we went back to the first place our tour started, this really cool bar/restauarant/library/art museum. We had some drinks and just hung out for bit because we had to wait out a crazy rain/thunder storm that came out of nowhere. But they had live music, so we had a great time just hanging out, drinking, and listening to the music.
We headed back to our Air BnB so we could get ready for a Sunset cruise we had booked, but unfortunatley after we got back, we found out it was cancelled due to the weather. Linda arrived earlier this afternoon, so the 7 of us went to a neighborhood that Hayley, Jesse, Sue and Gerry discovered the night before and had dinner and hung out there instead.
Something really cool about Miami is they have this ride service called "Freebie." It is app you download on your phone (kind of like Uber or Lyft) but its just free! Its like a big golf cart, but it holds up to 6 people, and it will take you only a certain distance, but it worked for us to get where we were going for dinner! We did of course tip though.
We went to a bar/restaurant called BND Burgers and got great burgers (veggie for me!) and cheese fries. We then walked to this area called the Wynwood Walls where there is a ton of street art, and enjoyed our time there. We ended the night a pretty hoppin' Mojito Bar and got flavored Mojitos before heading back to the Air BnB for the night.
Overall, it was a busy, but super fun day. I think we already got a great feel for Miami in just our first day! Local food, local drinks, local art. Experienced a rain and thunderstorm, and yes, it is very, very, very hot and humid here.
Tomorrow we have a segway tour planned, and then plan on hanging out at the beach! We were able to reschedule our sunset boat cruise to tomorrow as well, which works out great, because then Mary will be able to join us! She gets in early tomorrow morning. Looking forward to seeing the beach, and riding a segway for my first time!!
