We arrived in Bangkok Thursday afternoon and caught a shuttle bus to take us from the new airport to Khao San Rd. Little did we know that today was the first day of Songkran - Thai New Year. This is celebrated across 4 days by throwing huge amounts of water over everybody and covering people with white powder/talc. We got off the bus as close to Khao San as we could get and within minutes we were covered head to toe, even our backpacks - they take no prisoners! After running the gauntlet we eventually found our hotel, dumped our stuff and went outside for some action to get our revenge! The Khao San Rd was blocked off due to the arrival of the Thai queen (not the British which Charlotte thought!) so we headed to the neighbouring streets to arm ourselves with water pistols. The streets were absolutely rammed with people old and young with their water pistols. Everyone was really up for a good time, music was playing from all the bars and lots of alcohol being consumed. This went on for 4 days!!! and we don't think we were ever dry! So as you can probably guess... our first few days in Bangkok were pretty crazy and we didn't really see much other than the buckets of water being thrown in our faces!!
After Songkran things started to die down a bit but we don't think things really ever do on Khao San Rd - this is an all day and all night party place!!! In between partying we did find time to venture off Khao San to catch a water taxi to Silom Road to visit Air New Zealand. The water taxi is a really good way of getting about in Bangkok, its pretty cheap and you get to see lots along the waters edge. After Silom Rd we caught the sky train to the Sukumvit area to go to a restaurant called Cabbages & Condoms. This is a pretty popular place with others opening up around Asia, some of their profits go to safe sex education and AIDS charities in Asia and instead of after dinner mints you get free condoms!!
After this little venture we were getting withdrawl symptoms from Khao San Rd so went back for some more action! We met a good group of people here so the regular thing seemed to be Sangsom buckets in Shamrock bar then ending up in Gullivers. One night we did experience a Thai nightclub called 'Spicey Spicey' which was pretty interesting!!Â
We had a wicked time in Bangkok, its a really fun place with lots of backpackers, we're hoping to go back for a couple of days later on but after spending a week there we needed to escape......
Hope your all well back home, we hear your having really nice weather - bet its not as good as ours!!
Lots of love us xxxxxxxxxxxxx Â
