After our 7 week working stint in the outback we are now back to being ladies of leisure! We have decided that working doesn't agree with us so have returned to what we know and do best - partying and soaking up the sun!
The past few weeks have flown by as we've been working two jobs 7 days a week. As well as working in the 'animal bar' we were also offered extra work at Ash's cafe which is famous for its fish 'n' chips. Its been pretty full on and we haven't had much free time to explore Kurumba, it wasn't until our last week where we cut down our hours and decided to do a spot of sightseeing....
Kurumba is one of the only places that has a fish breeding farm open to the public so one afternoon a few of us headed down to the Barramundi Discovery centre to feed and watch the barra. This was really interesting as we learnt a lot about the fish we've been serving with chips at Ash's!! Poor b*****s!! The barra are huge fish and slightly scary to feed - they have no teeth so just have to suck the food from your hand. We each climbed up the ladder to the top of their tanks and held a pilchard over the water for them to jump out and hoover it up!! We got pretty wet!!
We finished work a day early before we left so that we were able to go out on a fishing charter that was a treat from the owners of Ash's. The fishing boat left bright and early at 7am to head further out to sea. The water was really choppy and the weather was really windy so it wasn't the most pleasant of journeys - especially when there were kids being sick over the side!! It soon calmed down though and we quickly had our fishing rods over the side ready to catch our first fish. It took a while but eventually they were biting and we managed to catch enough for our tea that evening. We mostly caught steel-backed salmon and a couple of toad fish (which aren't edible!), one guy was lucky enough to catch a king salmon. After 4 hrs of fishing we headed back to dry land where we were lucky enough to find willing people to fillet our fish for us! Result!! In return we gave away 2 of our fishy's. Dinner was lovely and we soon got over the fact that they had been alive and swimming in the sea that day!
Before we left Karumba we were both intent on seeing a croc so that same afternoon we went up the river with one of the local guy's Dan to try and spot one. It took a long time coming but eventually we managed to spot quite a few. We caught sightings of a couple of baby crocs disappearing into the water and the we got a clear view of a couple of big ones sunbathing on the river bank. Check out the pics if you don't believe us! Now we know why you can't swim in Karumba!
We were able to leave Karumba the next day content that we'd worked hard and earnt some money and experienced the gulf! It has been a good experience for us and we've seen part of Australia that we hadn't planned to see and that is very different to the rest of the east coast but we're happy to be back backpacking again and love the thought of having another five months of no work and all play!
We are now in Cairns and have lots planned over the next few days so will update you all again when we leave.
We hope everyone is well and enjoying the late British summer! We are missing you all lots! Thanks for all the messages, we won't make you wait as long this time for the next update! Take care, lots of love us xxxxxxx
PS. Charlotte says 'thanks for all the birthday messages and cards/pressies sent. They do have post in Karumba!! I had a really good day though not sure celebrating 25 is a good thing!!'
