Singapore, 16th Jan 09
I was pleasantly suprised with this city! I had heard mixed reviews so wasn't expecting to much but then found to my suprise a vibrant city with kind polite people and a lot to fit into one day of sight seeing!!
The hostel I was staying in was a bit hippyish but it was run very well, the free internet and breakfast went down well with me! I got up early and headed to Raffles hotel to take a look, I managed to get myself right inside the main lobby - pretty impressive as I wasn't dressed to impress and the better rooms go for around 4 to 5,000 pounds a night!!! I just strode in confidently as if I was staying there, took a few pictures (a bit of a giveaway) and scarpered!!
I then took a duck tour - I know sad but I only had one day! The first one took me around the old parts of Singapore (heritige tour) there was some commentry which was helpful for the ignorant tourist and you could jump on and off wherever you wanted. The second took me the newer part of town (Jesus the housing in Singapore is even more expensive than England) about 10% of the population are millionaires!! Which would explain the huge number of posh shopping malls! We went passed Orchard Road which is the famous street in Singapore, there are loads of hotels and malls. I jumped off this tour at the Botanic Gardens which was absolutely lovely (a bit hot mind!), they had an orchid garden which was really good but I was in a bit of a rush so I just snapped a few pic's and headed back.
Had quick shower and spruced myself up for a trip to Raffles Hotel long bar; the place famours for inventing the Singapore Sling! I treated myself to one of those which set me back over 12 pound so I made sure I got a picture to remember the invent (sadly I looked all shiny due to the amount of mossie spray I had applied!). It was pretty good and thankfully it is a long cocktail so I made it last. I bumped into a real rich american lady and she passed my time with some tales of when she had stayed at the hotel years ago. I then rushed to catch my bus to the night safari which is at Singapore zoo, there was a tram ride and a show to watch with nocturnal animals such as wolf and otter making appearances and also some night walks. I liked it there but didn't really have enough time as I had to catch the bus home. Also some Russian dude followed me about which was tres annoying, can't believe they can't figure out when they are invading someone's space! I liked the wolf best.
And that was it really I headed out very early the next morning to catch my flight to Borneo. Which I was pretty knackered for as I had to get up at 5am and some English girl in a bed near mine puked at 1.30am all over the floor and was in a right state (food poisoning - obviously I have been there before) so I got her cleaned up and sorted out the mess but then I couldn't get back to sleep as I kept thinking she was going to jump up and puke on me (it was pretty close the first time!). So pretty tired for my arrival to Borneo!!
