Beccy's Travel Journal
So the night buses werent exactly like firstclass plane seats and to add insult to the injury of a painful nights sleep we woke up to find we were back in england! well it could have been england, it was cold grey and raining a lot! This was Foz where the Iguassu falls are. ironically, despite all the rain, the water level of the river feeding the falls was only 20% of normal flow levels so the falls were, well rubbish. but we saw a postcard that showed what they are meant to look like so that was good! the second day in foz we visited a dam (dave u probably know it!) it was also rubbish, but the 15 min promotion style film we sat through before seeing it was very funny (a-level geography girls, good times)! then we went to see the falls from the argentinian side which was a bit more impressive cos we got closer but still generally rubbish. before we left Foz on another night bus (oh joy!) we went into paraguay for a couple of hours to buy cheap (stolen?!) electrical goods. it was our scariest experience yet, despite being with the group and tour guides, and made worse by the fact that julie and i are like a freak show for the people of paraguay. apparently they have never before seen blonde or strawberryblonde hair!
the shopping experience was fantastic tho, i think we should have a service like this in england; you can buy through ur car window in a traffic jam, pringles, evil laughing monkey toys, drinks, socks, medical equipment, comedy glasses with attacked noses... the list goes on and on! it would have been fantastic if we were too affraid to open the windows!
A night bus through argentina this time to uruaguay (we got a lot of passport stamps that day, 4 countries in 24 hours!). we had to get off the bus at 4am though, at a cross roads in the middle of nowhere to get taxis to take us over the boarder, nothing half as scary as paraguay tho.
Uruaguay so far we really like. it is freezing which has come a a bit of a surprise (6 C with a freezing wind!) but it is sunny so that lifted our spirits! we spent one night in Salto a small town with nothing much going on but some really lovely old building and cute tree lined streets and really nice and cheap places to eat. Salto also has natural thermal spas which we visited on saturday, unfortunately so did all the over 60's of argentina. think it was a national argentinian holiday. it was not a pretty sight!
got a 6hr bus from salto to the capital city montevideo (still havent been sick!) and its getting even colder!
but the hotel we stayed in is the cutest old hotel with a fancy old elevator and more importanly, radiators! We did a city bus tour, to stay in from the cold and decided montevideo could be any eastern european city. not many interesting sights, but the stadium where the first world cup was held (and won by uruguay) is here which is cool.
walked about the city for a bit yesterday and it is lovely, but think i would come back in the summer. we walked all the way along the sea front (amazing beaches, but again maybe for the summer) to the shopping mall. stopped to ride a police horse on the way and then got a mounted police escort most of the rest of the way! at the mall we stocked up on hats gloves coats and scarves, so now we are warm we are really enjoying uruguay.
we left montevideo thismorning and are now in colonia, which seems quite quiet. the only thing we have found to do here so far is climb trees, but thats ok!
we get a boat at 4 tomorrow morning (!!!) down to buenos aries for the last part of the organised tour and are seeing a tango show tomorrow night. but mostly we are very excited about meeting some more travellers. we have booked a youth hostel in BA called the milhouse for the 2 nights after we leave the tour, it had been recommended by every other travel we have met and is infamous!
we wil tell you all about it....!
hope you are all well. love from us xxxxxx
