Hello guys, is becca and rosie here reporting from singapore!!! So we left bangkok on tuesday and were both rather sad to go!! However, onwards and upwards and kind of downwards we arrived safetly in Singapore courtesy of Tiger Airways (who we will never be flying with again - as we both feared for our lives for the duration of the flight!!) So anyway, Singapore airport was a dream compared to Bangkok, we were through it in ten minutes and found where to get a fully licensed, non-psycho kidnapping taxi to our hostel. Singapore was less of a culture shock but still wasnt really what we expected and was strangely hard to get used to after Thailand. We got to our hostel - summer tavern, which was in a really good spot - close to starbucks! This was our first dorm experience minus the fellow room mates but in our defence we did have to share a bathroom and had no windows!! We went straight out to explore the city and came across clarke quay which was really pretty but very posh and expensive and not very backpackerish at all so we felt a bit out of place. After a coffee and a very yummy cake we headed to China town which was only 5 mins from our hostel. We wandered around the night markets and just about managed to not spend any money before having tea at the food market. Becca (kind of) voluntarily had chinese food - shocker!! The waitress offered us free dodgy whiskey if we ate there which helped a bit!
Day two in Singapore was a whirlwind sight seeing tour - we easily managed to see pretty much everything in one day (which says a lot!) including raffles landing site, the supreme court, the city hall, the fullerton hotel and some famous bridge next to it, the esplanade theatre complex, the Merlion (mer-leon as becca pronounces it) with the tour finishing in a different, riverside starbucks. Next stop was Little India, which really did feel like you had just walked around the corner into india. Then the heavens opened so we legged it to the little india arcade before visitng yet some more temples - indian ones this time!! After that - high-light of Singapore so far, we found the prince of wales backpacker pub so naturally had to stop for a drink. Back on the MRT (Singapore metro) we headed for Orchard road the main shopping and dining district where we had tea at Pizza hut as this was all we could afford! That night it monsooned pretty much all night so we were stranded in the hostel apart from a quick trip to the 7 eleven (asian spar) for raspberry ripple ice cream, and yes we managed a whole tub.
Next morning it was still raining and unfortunately we hadnt managed to sleep through the alarm and so were up early for breakfast. Armed with a huge umbrella we braved the weather for a day trip to Sentosa Island. We got the cable car across which would have had nice views of Singapore if it wasnt for the rain. Sentosa was interesting....... a bit like a pants version of disneyland. First stop was 4d magix which did actually terrify both of us!! (where u sit in a cinema and wear v unflattering glasses that make it 4D) After our subway dinner we went on the fascinating merlion walk before getting the tram to the beach for some tasty ice cream again. Caught up in the excitement of Sentosa we managed to miss the tram stop on the way back and ended up back on the main land. We still desperately wanted to go up the Carlsberg Sky tower - no free beer unfortunately, so jumped back on the tram. The tower was of course well worth the hassle but we then decided to call Sentosa a day and go back to the hostel. That night we got all dressed up - the hostel manager actually didnt recognise us!! and went for a nice meal at clarke quay. The plan was to go to raffles for a singapore sling afterwards but we got a bit lost trying to find it so gave up and went back to a bar on the quayside. Big mistake!! We were sat down for 5 mins when 2 extremely drunk business men expats came to join us...... Oh lord. They wanted to take us out on the razz and show us the posh bars and clubs of Singapore offering to buy us all the champage we wanted all night. As tempting as the free alcohol was we politely declined considering they were at least 10 years older than us.
Was our last day in Singapore today and we succedded in sleeping through the alarm til 11 thanks to the lack of windows. First stop Maccy D for some dinner then we boarded a river boat for a cruise - thrilling. The voice over on the boat had to be the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard!!! "the posh hotels hugged on to the river as if being nurtured by its goodness..doesn't Singapore just make you want to write a poem about kittens and flowers and rainbows!!" HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Anyway we're just about to head off tro the airport..we've shunned a taxi ride and are making the hour long trip on the MRT!!! Next stop is adelaide via melbourne (where we land at 5 in the morning!!) Fun times ahead....
