We drove over to another National Trust site today called Glendurgan Garden. I wasn't really all that keen on going, mostly because I was tired, but am so glad I did! It was just beautiful, and so well cared for--and we saw plants we've never seen before today.
We walked all around the grounds, and ended up down at the sea. One of the old timers we ran into told us that the area had been a staging place for the D Day invasion, and the entire cove was full of boats, American, Canadian and British!
We walked back to the main area and had lunch in their cafe. You wouldn't think you'd be able to get much, but their food was delicious! I had a bowl of seafood chowder that was amazing, and Rich got a sausage pasty.
After lunch, we drove to another place that was nearby called Trelissick.
We viewed the house, which really wasn't all that much...seems the owners decided they couldn't afford the upkeep, and moved out in 2013. Unfortunately for us as the public, they held an auction and sold almost all of the original furnishings. The house is also falling into disrepair, so it wasn't all that grand a viewing after all.
However, the gardens more than made up for it. We were able to join a guided garden tour and the lady was very knowledgeable about the plants. She pointed out things we would have missed on our own, as well as identifying some we'd been curious about. There was one in particular called the monkeys puzzle tree--it looks like a pine of sorts, but has spikes all along its bark and very thorny branches. I'll post some pictures once I can.
Another couple of plants we loved were the lace cup hydrangeas and the fushias. So gorgeous!
After we finished our tour, we were both tired, so headed back to Coverack.
I haven't been updating on a regular basis because we've been so busy planning what to do and where to stay!
