We were a little tired of having to drive to visit places on Friday, it's so incredibly stressful--that we just decided to stay in and have a day of rest! We managed to drag ourselves out for a walk to see a movie, War for the Planet of the Apes (not much to choose from and it was better than I'd anticipated). Packed, fixed dinner and that was our day!
Today we drove from Cheltenham to a castle called Powis. What an amazing place!! It was originally built in the 1200's, and owned by the same family all through the years. They were big collectors of paintings, porcelain and fine furniture and almost all of their original furnishings are on display. The castle itself was a work of art, from the wood paneling walls and carvings, to the flooring and ceilings...no photos allowed, which was a shame...it was so beautiful. When the last heir died, he left the estate to the National Trust. His sons had been killed in the wars (one son died in WWI, the other in WWII), and they never had children. All those centuries of family gone--seems so hard to imagine.
Anyway, we only toured the house and museum--see the pictures of the birds, I was allowed to take photos in there and have to admit it was a bit creepy! Thought of my mother, I think because there were so many!! I only shot a few of the cases, there were MANY more.
Grabbed some lunch, and then got back on the road. We made it all the way to Trelawnyd, Wales with no problems, and then couldn't find the darned apartment!! Turns out we were parked right in front of it, but there was a different street name. Oh well, we eventually found our host and were let in.
It's a small place and the bathroom is upstairs, but we probably won't be here that much anyway.
Touring Liverpool tomorrow!
