We made it to our cottage in Cockermouth without any wrong turns, no easy feat!! We've got poor wifi service so I haven't been able to get access to my blog. We are in a small village today that offers free wifi, so I'm taking advantage.
Our first day here in the Lake District was absolutely gorgeous! According to one local older man we chatted with, it was their one day of summer--and it was still on the chilly side to me.
We visited the childhood home of William Wordsworth, the poet, who was born and raised in Cockermouth. It was a large Manor and the largest in town, especially for the times (1700's). His father was a solicitor, lawyer to us, and worked for someone high up the ladder. Unfortunately for the family, William's mother died when he was only 8, and his father passed away just a few years later leaving the children orphans.
The house has been furnished as it would've been during that time and the docents were busy in the kitchen making food from that era and dressed in costume. The food looked yucky to me. :)
We finally got to have our Sunday roast, which is something all the pubs serve on Sunday afternoon. After all the hype, it was just ok.
Since it was such a beautiful day, we decided to take a drive in the country to see some of the lakes. Us and about every other citizen in the UK!! It was so crowded and the roads were extremely narrow, it took us about 3 hours to go 25 miles. Rich was worn out from the stress of driving in the traffic. The views were so pretty, but I'm not sure it was worth the stress.
The next day was rainy and foggy, but we went ahead with our plans, which were to drive south and catch a train that took us from Ravenglass to a place 7 miles away. We thought we would be going through some pretty scenery, but it was mostly woods and we couldn't see anything. :(
We got off the train, had lunch and caught the next one back. On the way home, we stopped off at a beach and FROZE!! The wind was whipping, and right when we got away from the car, it began to rain. Neither of us has waterproof coats, so we got wet. Fortunately, we weren't that far from home.
Today we left early and drove about 45 minutes to catch a steamer boat to take us around Lake Ullswater. It's a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and a few homes. I opted to stay below deck as that wind was biting and the temperature was only 59! It also was overcast and looked like it could begin raining at any moment.
We got off the boat in a village called Glenridding, had a burger and a pint at a pub and then caught the boat back to our car at Pooley Bridge. Our plan is to visit a spa this afternoon. Update will come next time I get wifi!
