We woke up to another beautiful day--chilly with a breeze, heavenly!! Especially since I know it's miserable back home. :))
After breakfast, we went out exploring. We are only a short walk away from a main pedestrian area, which fronts the marina and port of Bar. There are a lot of restaurants, shops and banks, of all things! I mean there must be at least 6 or 7 right in a row. So strange!!
We saw a tourist office and went in to see what they had available. The lady working there was very helpful in giving us information about what to see and do while in Montenegro. All these people kept coming in and she would speak to them telling them to go next door. We finally asked her what was going on and she said they were tourists that needed to register their stay at the office next door. We then found out that WE also needed to do that. We've had to do it a few times before, although it was handled by our Airbnb hosts. Rich checked online and it turns out that if you're stopped at the border and asked for the document that proves you registered, and don't have it--you can be denied passage!! Needless to say, we took care of that right away!
The beach was just a little bit away, so we went to go check it out. It's completely rock...see the pictures. There are boardwalks going out to the chairs, but people were lying on the rocks like sand. Rich put his feet in the water and said it was a lot colder than Durrës. I'm holding out for the sand beach that's about 15 minutes away from here.
We had read about a palace that was built for King Nikola in 1867, and is now a museum. It was right across from a rocky beach we checked out, so we went in. Lots of old weapons, clothing--not a whole lot to get excited about.
We went back to our car and drove up into the mountains to see the Old Town of Bar, called Stari Bar. It's mostly in ruins but slowly has been renovated, and now has lots of cafes and souvenir shops on the way to the remnants. We had to climb a very steep hill in order to get to the top, and it was warm...I was a sweaty mess by the time we made it. The views were pretty, and I was glad I'd done it.
We wandered around looking at all the old structures for a couple hours. Once we'd had enough, we left to go see the old olive tree. This tree is documented as being well over 2,000 years old!! It still produces olives and the oil is sold for a premium.
We had the best dinner we've had since leaving home tonight! It was at a place near our apartment and I thought it was just going to be a pizza place, but they had a full menu. Rich got fresh fish and I had grilled prawns. Quite possibly the best shrimp I've ever had!! Cooked and seasoned perfectly, with veggies and potatoes. Dessert was a chocolate cheesecake/mousse concoction that was delicious. We had a cute waitress who had recommended all these items and she was spot on. We will have to go back before we leave.
A good first day in Bar!
